The DRK Kliniken Berlin are an amalgamation of four Berlin hospitals , a nursing home and a hospice. The partner is the DRK sisterhood in Berlin . The clinics employ around 3,400 people and treat around 200,000 outpatients (around 160,000) and inpatients (around 40,000) each year. More than 3,800 births take place every year. The annual turnover is around 220 million euros (as of August 2017).

history

From 1875 to 1975

The origin of the DRK Kliniken Berlin goes back to the Auxiliary Sisters ' Association founded in 1875 by the Silesian Countess Hedwig von Rittberg , which was later named after her sisterhood Rittberghaus .

In 1898 the sisterhood Rittberghaus was divided from the DRK e. V. to the German Red Cross .

In 1919 the Rittberg Sisterhood acquired their first hospital: the former Homeopathic Hospital in Berlin-Lichterfelde , which was continued as the Rittberg Hospital .

In 1975, four Berlin sororities merged to form the DRK-Schwesternschaft Berlin e. V. With the establishment of the German Red Cross Sisterhood Berlin Gemeinnützige Krankenhaus GmbH , the foundation stone for the facilities of the DRK Sisterhood Berlin was laid. This included three hospitals: the Rittberg Hospital of the Red Cross including the Rittberg Children's Clinic, the DRK Hospital Jungfernheide and the DRK Hospital Mark Brandenburg with its locations at Drontheimer Strasse and Mariendorf . 850 people were employed in the founding year.

Since 1975

As a result of the fall of the Berlin Wall, all of the existing clinics in both parts of Berlin were completely reorganized. The previous state hospitals in East Berlin came to various supporting institutions. The existing DRK network has now taken over the Köpenick hospital .

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the DRK Kliniken Berlin has represented itself as an association of four hospitals, a nursing home in Mariendorf and a hospice in Köpenick . With around 3,400 employees, the entire company was one of the 26 largest employers in Berlin's economy. The annual turnover was around 220 million euros (both figures: as of January 2014).

Quality controls

In March 2015, the quality of the clinic network was checked for the first time by external experts according to the criteria of KTQ (cooperation for transparency and quality in the health care system). The clinic association was successfully certified with this seal of approval for quality.

In March 2018, the clinic network was re-certified by KTQ and the DRK clinics Berlin were recertified.

In addition, in March 2018 the DRK Kliniken Berlin was the first clinic association in Berlin to be awarded the MRE seal. The MRE seal is awarded to hospitals and inpatient facilities that contribute to the prevention and control of MRE ( multi-resistant pathogens ) through quality assurance measures . As part of the preventive measures, the DRK clinics introduced general MRSA screening in September 2017, for example , in order to identify MRSA carriers at an early stage.

The DRK Clinics Berlin were assessed by the Joint Commission International (JCI) with regard to the internationally applicable criteria (medical and nursing care for patients as well as quality of treatment) in 2002 and were the second German clinic facility to be certified for the first time . In October 2011, the DRK Group Berlin met the JCI criteria for the third time. Since the award ( accreditation ) is valid for three years, the reference expired on October 28, 2014.

Cultural engagement

Under the motto Art and Culture in the Hospital , solo exhibitions by famous contemporary artists are held, 70 to 100 works each are shown in the historic building of the Westend Hospital, including Olav Christopher Jenssen , Georg Baselitz , Adam Jankowski , Bernd Koberling , Matthias Mansen . Small exhibitions are dedicated to Berlin artists and young artists.

Problems

2010: Suspicion of accounting fraud and personal injury

On June 9, 2010, 150 police officers and the Berlin public prosecutor's office searched the company's headquarters in Berlin-Wilmersdorf , the three large clinics in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen , Berlin-Westend and Berlin-Köpenick , the outpatient treatment centers ( MVZ ) in Mitte and Westend, a private clinic in Mitte as well as 18 apartments in Berlin and 4 in Brandenburg. The investigation revolved around allegations of false medical treatment, at least 128 fake statements and 56 personal injuries. The public prosecutor spoke of a "gang and professional medical accounting fraud". Two managing directors of the clinic network and the chief physician of radiology in the Berlin-Mitte hospital were arrested.

The evaluations have shown that 12 interns are said to have treated the patients knowingly and on instructions without the required specialist qualification, which is why they were accused of dangerous bodily harm in 56 cases. The damage initially determined was 170,000 euros , and total damage in the millions is expected. The existing arrest warrants were not suspended due to the risk of escape and blackout. According to the judiciary, suspects are seeking several years' imprisonment for economic crime. The arrest warrants have since been overturned. On September 30, 2010, another 350 police officers searched the supply centers of DRK clinics and 150 apartments of managing directors and doctors. The public prosecutor's office is now investigating more than 90 employees of the DRK clinics (as of June 2011) and announced the imminent conclusion of the proceedings and indictments.

Comparison ends the investigation

As a consequence of the scandal, the DRK Kliniken Berlin and the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians Berlin (KV) agreed a settlement on the handling of outpatient medical care centers (MVZ) at the clinic locations in Mitte, Westend and Köpenick. The outpatient medical centers have been gradually closed. Only in the areas of radiation therapy and radiology were special solutions agreed at the clinic in Westend in cooperation with KV. The non-profit clinic association has repaid KV eleven million euros in fees. A lengthy procedure could thus be avoided. Personnel changes in the administration laid the foundations for a greater professionalization of the administration systems.

2015: hygiene scandal

Georg Dänzer, who was appointed chairman of the supervisory board of the DRK Kliniken Berlin on December 1, 2015 and was the former head of the Mannheim University Hospital , is investigated in what is probably Germany's largest hygiene scandal. The public prosecutor has brought charges against him for violating the Medical Devices Act for years. From 2007 to 2014, the Mannheim University Hospital was not able to properly clean surgical instruments after use. Dänzer knew of the danger, but did nothing about it, despite multiple warnings and specific advice from clinicians.
