Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The JCAHO or Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations is a US non-profit organization founded in 1952.

The organization is based in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. JCAHO aims to increase the safety and quality of medical services available to the public in the United States. To this end, it has developed international patient safety goals together with the World Health Organization (WHO) and certifies health services. In addition, related services are offered to help improve process quality at healthcare providers.

Often just the abbreviation “ Joint Commission ” or (phonetically) “Dsche-i Ko” (English for J Co) is used to name the organization .

The organization employs investigators who are sent to the health care providers to evaluate their procedures and equipment . The organizations examined are then rated with a value from 1 to 100, with 100 meaning “perfect”. The organizations studied are highly motivated to do well in these evaluations, as accreditation is a key factor in receiving compensation from Medicare or managed care organizations. However, 99% of hospitals manage these audits, which some also suggests a conflict of interest for the investigators (who receive around 100 million euros in fees and revenues from the hospitals annually). On the other hand, successful accreditation by JCAHO is vital for most hospitals in the USA, as they are not allowed to treat patients from the two major American health insurers Medicare and Medicaid without this accreditation. Therefore, every clinic employs quality and accreditation officers who continuously prepare the organization for the three-year review.

But JCAHO also carries out accreditations outside the USA. B. for the Chemnitz Clinic , the Greiz District Hospital and the German Armed Forces Central Hospital in Koblenz .

The president of JCAHO is Mark R. Chassin.
