The Greiz District Hospital is an acute hospital based in Greiz, Thuringia, and an academic teaching hospital of the University of Jena with regional (intermediate) care.

history

The hospital started out as today's Greiz District Hospital in 1744 and 1745. At that time it was still called "Kranckenhauß", it was halfway up, to the right of the Gommlaer Berg, and offered space for a dozen people. In 1860 another hospital was built in Brunnengasse in Greiz, which provided capacity for around 35 patients. 33 years later, in 1893, the foundation stone for the current building of the district hospital in Greiz was laid. The new state building, built in neo-Gothic style, had 50 beds for patients at that time. Today this building is called the "Red House".

In 1908, the construction of today's “Yellow House” began with the purpose of being an isolation and infection building with 30 hospital beds, which was inaugurated in 1923 despite inflation. At the opening of the house, a practicing doctor had a saying called "THE SICK WELL IS TOP PRIORITY" posted above the main entrance. In the following years (1936-1953) a farm building was built, the medical college was founded and a children's department was created in the former “Old Fellow House” on Irchwitzer Strasse in Greiz.

As an extension of the hospital, the private gynecological clinic in Poststrasse in Greiz was acquired in 1954 and the former tuberculosis hospital in Teichwolframsdorf in 1956 . Both houses were expanded and rebuilt, for example with infection departments and ENT departments or wards for the chronically ill and slightly ill. Between 1956 and 1959, a doctor's house and a nurses ' home were built in the neighborhood of the Red and Yellow House, and the “Yellow House” was expanded to include an obstetric and gynecological department.

In the 1970s, new departments were added to the hospital, around 1970 an anesthesia and intensive therapy ward and around 1979 a urological department, which was housed in the "Yellow House". In the meantime, a comprehensive renovation of the red house began. On May 3, 1993, the Greiz District Hospital was born with the establishment of a limited liability company, the “Greiz District Hospital GmbH”. This step was necessary in order to generate the urgently needed funds for modernization in the post-reunification period.

After surviving the establishment of the GmbH, the first plans to renovate and expand the hospital began in 1992. A little later, the planning and construction of the energy center followed , which was sealed with the laying of the foundation stone on May 2, 1995. The construction of the energy center took almost a year and was completed on April 22, 1996. In 1998 the preliminary renovation work was completed with the handover of the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics .

Between 1998 and 2003 the “2. Construction phase ”and the handover of the functional building to the doctors and the population for use. Just one year later, on April 22nd, 2004, construction of the new ward block (3rd construction phase) began, which celebrated the topping-out ceremony in 2005 and was handed over and opened in 2006.
