Hermann Wintz

Hermann Ludwig Wintz (born August 12, 1887 in Speyer ; † June 11, 1947 in Zusmarshausen ) was a German gynecologist , obstetrician , radiologist and university professor .

Life

Born the son of a furniture manufacturer, Wintz studied medicine , philosophy , physics and chemistry in Erlangen , Freiburg im Breisgau and Heidelberg after attending the humanistic grammar school in Speyer . During his studies in 1908 he became a member of the Germania Erlangen fraternity . After his exam in Erlangen and 1912/13 short time as an assistant at the medical clinic in Heidelberg and since 1913 as an assistant at the University Hospital of Erlangen, he was in 1914 in Erlangen, Dr. med. PhD . During the First World War he worked as a doctor in an Erlangen reserve hospital. From 1917 he was a senior physician at the Erlangen Polyclinic . In 1918/19 he became a doctor in the Erlanger Jägerkorps and in the Engelhardt Freikorps . In 1920 he completed his habilitation in Erlangen for obstetrics and gynecology and became a non-official associate professor in Erlangen. From 1921 to 1945 he was a full professor for obstetrics and gynecology in Erlangen.

He became director of the university women's clinic and the midwifery school. During his tenure during the Nazi era , forced sterilizations and forced abortions were carried out on Eastern workers at the clinic , some of whom died in succession. In 1922 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. He conducted research in medicine, physics and chemistry and was a pioneer in the field of gynecological X-ray therapy , X-ray diagnostics and the fight against cancer through radiation therapy . In 1924 he became president of the German Radiological Society . From 1926 to 1929 he was chairman of the Bavarian Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology . In 1935 he became a member of the NSDAP (membership number 3,687,923). In 1938 he became rector of the University of Erlangen until he was recalled in 1944 because he was not completely loyal to the party. At the end of the Second World War he campaigned for Erlangen to be handed over to the Americans without a fight. As head of the clinic, he was released in June 1945. He was interned in the Hersbruck camp. He died in 1947 as a result of an illness he contracted there.
