The King Ludwig Cross was an award in the Kingdom of Bavaria .

Foundation, endowment

The cross was on January 7, 1916 by King Ludwig III. Donated by Bavaria as a token of honorable and grateful recognition for people who, through voluntary work in their homeland, did special services to the Bavarian army or to the welfare of the country during the war .

Manufacturing and appearance

The award was made in large numbers: 250 copies in silver for the king's cabinet, ministries and for collecting purposes, about 30,000 copies in bronze, 20,000 copies in iron and in 1918 about 40,000 copies in zinc, each stained black.

The cross has smooth, rounded arms that widen outwards.

On the obverse, in the oval central shield, the head of King Ludwig III looking to the right is in profile.

The reverse shows the two-line date (date of foundation) in the center plate: “7. I. / 1916 ”on the Bavarian alarm pattern.

Carrying method

The decoration was carried on a sky-blue ribbon with white-blue cross ribs in the middle on the left chest.
