Werner Schuster (born September 4, 1969 in Hirschegg ) is a former Austrian ski jumper and today's ski jumping trainer. From 2008 to March 24, 2019, he was the national coach of the German national ski jumping team.

Career

Career as a ski jumper

The Vorarlberg Werner Schuster, son of the active also as a ski jumper Willy Schuster , from 1986 to 1995 active ski jumpers. However, he mostly did not get beyond the second-rate competition series European Cup and Continental Cup . In the 1990/91 season he won the Black Forest tour integrated in the European Cup and was also second in the overall European Cup standings. His best placement in the World Cup was a second place in jumping in Sapporo in December 1987 . In addition, since 1994, together with his colleague Matthias Wallner , he has held the all-time hill record of 158.0 meters on Copper Peak , the world's smallest ski flying hill , which was closed after this jump. While still active, he began studying sport and psychology at the University of Innsbruck (graduated in 2001 with the diploma thesis “Sport-oriented versatility training as a guiding principle for coordinative-technical training in ski jumping”).

Career as a ski jumping trainer

After finishing his active career, he trained as a ski jumping trainer in Innsbruck . From 1998 he worked as a trainer at the ski school in Stams . In 2007 he became the head coach of the Swiss national team. In March 2008 he was appointed coach of the German national team as the successor to Peter Rohwein . With the move to Schuster, the DSV initiated a fundamental change. When Schuster competed, no DSV athlete was among the top 15 in the overall World Cup, so the national coach first had to make long-term structural changes together with the sports director Horst Hüttel . The first sporting successes were already evident at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , when Martin Schmitt won the silver medal on the large hill. While it is difficult to attribute the achievements of a single athlete to the national coach, the successes of the German team as a whole reflect the work of Schuster. He celebrated his greatest success as a trainer at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi by winning the gold medal in team jumping. The victory of the Nations Cup of the World Cup 2014/15 is just as highly valued if it was only the second time after the 2001/02 season that Germany succeeded. After all, the German team took first place at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld and thus won the first team world championship title under Schuster's leadership. In total, Germany has had ten team World Cup victories since 2009.

In addition, Schuster and his coaching staff succeeded in shaping individual athletes into world-class athletes. As the trainer of Severin Freund , Andreas Wellinger , Richard Freitag and Markus Eisenbichler , he looked after ski jumpers who won major titles under his aegis or who were able to jump onto the podium in the overall World Cup. The Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun will be remembered , where Freund was the first German to win individual gold again after 15 years. Schuster commented on this success with the sentence: "I would never have thought that I would be able to wave off a world champion one day."

He ended his work as national coach for the German ski jumping team, which he began in 2008, on March 24, 2019, and was succeeded by Stefan Horngacher .

In May 2019, Schuster announced that he would be working again as a personal trainer for Gregor Schlierenzauer in preparation for the 2019/20 season .

Schuster is married and has two children.
