Willy Schuster (born November 9, 1937 in Hirschegg ) is a former Austrian ski jumper and ski jumping trainer.

Career

Schuster started skiing at a young age. However, he only came to ski jumping at the age of 19 through Otto Herz from SC Kleinwalsertal . In 1962, he was the first Vorarlberg ski jumper since the Second World War to be included in the national team. For the New Year's event in 1963, he joined the team at the Four Hills Tournament 1962/63 . However, he could not jump to the top ranks in any of the competitions and only reached 74th place in the overall ranking.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1964 he was a substitute in the extended squad and finally left the hill as a forerunner. Despite the lack of great success, Schuster started at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1966 . At his start on the large hill he reached the 24th place after jumps on 75.5 and 76.5 meters. He did not start on the normal hill.

With the following Four Hills Tournament 1966/67 he denied his most successful tour. He landed 14th in the opening competition in Oberstdorf for the first and only time among the top 20 on a tour. In the overall ranking he reached 22nd place.

In the following years he was unable to build on this success. Schuster also only traveled to the 1968 Winter Olympics as a substitute.

In 1970 he ended his international career, but remained active at regional games for a few years. After the final end of his ski jumping career , Schuster switched to motorsport and successfully competed in several hill climbs .

Schuster worked as a painter during and after his athletic career. Today he runs a guest house in Hirschegg with his wife Irene. Willy Schuster was the coach of the German women's national team until 2005. His son Werner was also an active ski jumper and coached the German national ski jumping team from 2008 to 2019.
