Wolfgang Steiert (born April 19, 1963 in Hinterzarten ) is a former German ski jumper and active ski jumping trainer.

Career

Wolfgang Steiert was an integral part of the German senior squad from 1981 to 1988/89. He began his international career by participating in the Four Hills Tournament in 1981/82 . In his first competition in the 1982/83 season in Cortina d'Ampezzo , he finished 10th and won his first World Cup points. After many falls, he ended his active career at the age of 25 in 1989.

In 1991 he became the coach of the German B-squad. In 1993 he was promoted to assistant coach of the national team alongside Reinhard Heß . The two formed a successful team, under which Sven Hannawald and Martin Schmitt celebrated their great successes. In 2003 he finally took over from Hess as national coach, but was replaced by Peter Rohwein in October 2004 after there were no successes and disagreements with Michael Möllinger and Frank Löffler .

Steiert then took over the vacant position as Russian national coach. There he was able to create a professional environment for the World Cup team and temporarily lead athletes like Denis Kornilow , Dmitri Ipatow or Ilya Roslyakov to the expanded world elite. With Dmitri Vassiljew he even managed to reach the top of the world. On February 24, 2010 Steiert officially announced his resignation as coach of the Russian national team. In November 2010, Wolfgang Steiert returned to the German Ski Association and has been working as a ski jumping coach at the ski boarding school in Furtwangen ever since . Together with the federal junior trainer Rolf Schilli , he is working on setting up a women's ski jumping team in Baden-Württemberg.

Wolfgang Steiert is the father of two daughters. One of his hobbies is golf .
