Shōhei Tochimoto ( Japanese 栃 本 翔 平 , Tochimoto Shōhei ; born December 21, 1989 in Sapporo ) is a Japanese ski jumper .
Career
Tochimoto has been a member of the “Megmilk Snow Brand Ski Team” of the Yukijirushi Nyūgyō dairy since 2008 . Previously, he jumped for the Hokkaidō-Shōshi-Gakuen high school ( 北海道 尚志 学園 高校 , Hokkaidō shōshi gakuen kōkō ). He made his international debut at the FIS show jumping test in Yamagata in March 2004 when he was only 15 years old. A year later he jumped again at FIS jumping in his home country and was able to convince with fourth place, so that shortly afterwards he was nominated for the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2005 in Rovaniemi and there, in addition to eighth place with the team, the 32nd place. Reached place in individual jumping. After two good results in the FIS Cup at the beginning of the 2005/06 season, he started in St. Moritz for the first time in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup and won his first points with 27th place. On January 21, 2006, he made his debut in the Ski Jumping World Cup and just missed the points in Sapporo with 32nd place. At the following Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2006 in Kranj , he won the bronze medal with the team. In the individual competition, he took a very good fifth place.
At the 46th Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo , he won the bronze medal in team jumping on the large hill together with his teammates Takanobu Okabe , Daiki Itō and Noriaki Kasai . He achieved this success again at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2009 in the same team line-up. In the individual jumping on the large hill of this world championship, Tochimoto reached 16th place. At the World Cup competition on November 28th, 2009 in Kuusamo , Finland , he achieved his best single place in the World Cup with sixth place.
At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , Tochimoto reached 37th place in jumping from the normal hill and was eliminated after the first round.
After the Olympic Games, Tochimoto continued in the World Cup. With the team he reached sixth place in the Lahti team competition. After he did not achieve any more points in the individual World Cups by the end of the season, he finished the season in 32nd place overall. In the Ski Jumping Grand Prix 2010 he started with a 12th place in Hinterzarten , but could not build on this placement in the following competitions. It was only in Wisła, Poland on the Malinka and in Hakuba on the Hakuba ski jumps that he achieved top placings again, so that in the end he finished in 13th place overall.
In the 2010/11 season Tochimoto started with a third place in the team world cup in Kuusamo , before he reached 19th place in the individual one day later. In the course of the season he surprised with various top positions in the qualifying competitions, including a second place on the Ōkurayama hill in Sapporo. In the competitions, however, he was never able to confirm these achievements. He landed well within the points, but in no competition among the top ten.
At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 , Tochimoto only competed in singles on the normal hill and reached 31st place. The 2011 Ski Jumping Grand Prix was disappointing for him. Despite good qualification results, he only reached the points again in Hakuba. However, this was due to the very limited field of participants. In the 2011/12 season Tochimoto started again strongly with a second place in the team competition of Kuusamo and a 12th place in the individual competition. As a result, however, he again failed to build on this success. He stayed in Oberstdorf until February 18, 2012 without winning a point.
At the Ski Flying World Championships 2012 in Vikersund Tochimoto reached fifth place with the team and was 39th in individual flying . In the following World Cups, he clearly missed the points and ended the season in 57th place in the overall World Cup ranking. This was his worst result of the season so far.
After he was unable to successfully jump in either the Summer Continental Cup or the Ski Jumping Grand Prix in the summer of 2012, he missed all competitions in the qualification at the beginning of the 2012/13 season , except for the team competition in Zakopane , where he and Daiki did Itō , Yūta Watase and Taku Takeuchi finished ninth from the bottom of the team competition. Only in Sapporo, where no qualification was carried out due to the small number of participants, he was able to jump in the competition, but again remained without points. Tochimoto then withdrew from the World Cup squad before the end of the 2012/13 season without winning a point.
In March 2013, Tochimoto competed in two international FIS competitions in Sapporo, but was again only able to achieve middle placements. At the World Cup competition in Sapporo on January 25, 2014, he was 28th and was able to achieve the points again for the first time in almost two years.
