Yūta Watase ( Japanese 渡 瀬 雄 太 , Watase Yūta ; born August 8, 1982 in Rumoi , Hokkaidō Prefecture ) is a former Japanese ski jumper .

Career

Like other ski jumpers, Watase attended the private high school of the same name in Sapporo, which is associated with Nihon University .

In January 1999 Watase competed in an international jumping competition for the first time in the World Cup in Sapporo and was able to win his first World Cup points straight away with a 14th place. After he was able to achieve first place with the team in Hakuba at the Ski Jumping Grand Prix in the summer of that year , he was also used in the World Cups taking place in Europe from the 1999/00 World Cup season. After a good start to the season with a 15th place in the opening competition in Kuopio , Finland , he could not reach the second round in any competition or failed to qualify several times. In the summer of 2000 he only took part in the Grand Prix held in Japan. Although he only performed moderately there, he started again in the World Cup the following winter. Here he had the same problems as in the previous year, but was able to achieve his first result in the top ten in an individual competition on January 10, 2001 in Park City with an eighth place. At the 2001 summer jumping competitions, his performance stabilized at a high level and he was able to achieve several top 10 placements. In the winter of 2001/02 he did not initially take part and then entered the Continental Cup (COC) in January 2002 . It was not until the end of winter that he started some World Cup competitions, but was unsuccessful. After that he completely disappeared from first class jumping for some time and only took part in COC and FIS competitions in Japan . It was only shortly before the end of 2004 that he started back in Europe at the Continental Cup in St. Moritz . After taking part in other COC competitions in January and February 2005, he started again at FIS competitions in Japan at the end of the season. In the 2005/06 season he started only in one World Cup and one FIS Cup , both of which took place in Sapporo. In the following season 2006/07 he only took part in two FIS Cups. After he returned to the Sapporo COC in January 2008 and was able to achieve a second place there, he took part in the World Cup again for the remainder of the 2007/08 season, but remained without significant results. At the Summer Grand Prix 2008 he took part in summer jumping for the first time in seven years and was able to achieve placements in the midfield. His best result so far in a World Cup competition he achieved fifth place on January 31, 2009 when jumping from the large hill in Sapporo.

At the Asian Games 2011 in Almaty , whose jumping competitions were held on the newly built hills of the Gorney Gigant Complex , Watase won the gold medal in a team with Kazuyoshi Funaki , Yūhei Sasaki and Kazuya Yoshioka . He won the premiere of the mixed team competition as part of the Summer Grand Prix on August 14, 2012 in Courchevel, France, with the Japanese team. At the very first mixed competition in the World Cup on November 24, 2012, he finished second with the Japanese team.

Even his father Yatarō Watase ( 渡 瀬 弥 太郎 ) was a ski jumper and his two years younger sister Ayumi Watase ( 渡 瀬 あ ゆ み ) belongs to the world's elite of women's ski jumping.
