Haim made his debut in the ski jumping world cup on January 4, 1984 in Innsbruck . He reached the 99th place. At the Junior World Championship in 1985 in Täsch , Switzerland , he won the gold medal on the K80 hill. At the end of the 1987/88 World Cup season he managed to win World Cup points for the first time in Planica with 5th place and also for the first time a placement among the top ten. After he got off to a weak start in the following season , he was able to jump into the top 10 regularly from January 1989. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 , however, he was unable to build on that and was only 38th on the normal hill and only on 33rd place on the large hill. In the team competition, he and his teammates made it to 6th place. After the World Cup, however, he was able to improve his performance again. On December 17, 1989, he stood on the podium for the first time in Sapporo and finished second. Four weeks later, on January 14, 1990, he won a jumping competition for the first time in Liberec . However, it was also the only World Cup victory in his career. He finished the season in 9th place in the overall World Cup ranking. He repeated this success after sustained good performance for the 1992/93 season . This season he was able to take several podiums, including ski flying on the Kulm . After this season, however, his performance decreased noticeably, which is why he started again in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup in 1993 , in which he had already achieved several good placements in parallel. He remained largely unsuccessful there after 1994, which is why he ended his active ski jumping career after the 1994/95 season.
Today Werner Haim is a teacher at the New Middle School in Axams . There he teaches sports, English and technical works.
