Florian Liegl (born February 1, 1983 in Innsbruck ) is a former Austrian ski jumper . With a height of 1.91 m and 69 kg weight, he was one of the tallest ski jumpers. Liegl is the singer and guitarist of the rock band Superpursuitmode , with whom he has recorded several albums. He has been assistant coach of the Austrian national ski jumping team since the 2013/14 season.

Career

Liegl was active for the SV Natters-Bergisel club . At the Junior World Championships in 1999 in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer and in 2000 in Štrbské Pleso, Slovakia, he won the team jumping title with the Austrians. At the Junior World Championships in 2001 in Karpacz , Poland , he was second in team competition and third in individual competition, tied with his compatriot Stefan Kaiser . Florian Liegl made his first appearance in the World Cup in the 1999/2000 season at the Four Hills Tournament in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen . He finished 34th and 50th here. His first complete World Cup season 2002/03 was also his most successful with 15 top ten placements, eight podium places and one victory. His first World Cup victory on February 1, 2003, when he was ski flying on the Kulm in Tauplitz, was also his only one. Overall, he finished fifth in the overall World Cup at the end of the season.

However, he could not achieve this performance in the following years. In 2003/04 there was no top ten placement, which meant only 40th place in the overall World Cup. In the 2004/05 season , his best result was a sixth place in Sapporo . At the end of the year he found himself in 31st place. That is why he surprisingly ended his career in autumn 2005. The reason for this decision were motivation and injury problems. In addition, he had to take on the thankless role of substitute in Team Austria at the 2005 World Cup.

The announcement of the comeback in April 2006 was as surprising as the resignation from ski jumping. The first World Cup appearance after the comeback took place on January 3, 2007 as part of the Four Hills Tournament 2006/07 in Innsbruck. Here he started in the national group and qualified for the main competition on January 4th, in which he was defeated in the knockout duel against Arttu Lappi . Overall, he finished 44th in this comeback in the World Cup. On January 7th, 2007 he achieved World Cup points for the first time in Bischofshofen as 29th.

At the Universiade 2007 he won gold in the team competition together with Bastian Kaltenböck and Manuel Fettner . Nevertheless, Liegl declared in May 2007 - for lack of motivation - his final retirement from active competitive sport. He initially worked as a base trainer in Innsbruck for the ÖSV . Since 2013 he has been co-trainer of the Austrian national team together with Florian Schabereiter .

At the Four Hills Tournament 2010/11 he took over the role of helmet camera jumper with Andreas Widhölzl .
