The Vogtland Arena is a ski jumping facility on the Schwarzberg in Klingenthal , Saxony .
history
Klingenthal applied to host the Olympic Winter Games in 1936. As part of this application, a ski jumping hill was to be built on the northern slope of the Schwarzberg, roughly where the Vogtland Arena is today. The manufacturer Howard Willie Meisel supplied the first drafts for the project on March 13, 1932. He planned the construction of a large hill with an inrun length of 110 m and a K-point of 150 m. The “Böllerschanze” would have been by far the largest ski jump in the world, as the world record in 1932 was still 82 meters. However, the Olympic Games were awarded to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and thus the plans were discarded again.
It was not until May 1957 that the construction of a ski jump with a K-point of 102 meters began in Klingenthal. The Große Aschbergschanze am Aschberg (also called "Asch") was inaugurated on February 1st, 1959. On September 26, 1990 the inrun tower and the inrun track were blown up due to the dilapidation of the ski jump. This meant that there was no longer a large ski jumping facility in Klingenthal until the Vogtland Arena was built.
The Vogtland Arena was built between 2003 and 2005 and was officially inaugurated on August 27, 2006 as part of the Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix . The first competition took place before the official opening in February 2006, when the Czech championship in ski jumping was held here. In March 2006 a B-World Cup of Nordic Combined was held, in September 2006 a Ski Jumping Grand Prix . On February 7, 2007, the VSC Klingenthal took over a failed competition of the Ski Jumping World Cup in Harrachov , which was the first FIS winter ski jumping competition in the arena. A ski jumping Grand Prix competition was also held in the summer of 2007 . In January 2008 a Nordic Combined World Cup was held in Klingenthal for the first time . Between 2009 and 2013 four competitions of the FIS-Team-Tour took place in the Vogtland Arena . In 2012, the jumping of the third FIS Team Tour in Klingenthal was canceled due to strong winds.
For the first time since the 1994/95 season , the 2013/14 season on 23 and 24 November 2013 did not open the season in Scandinavia, but in the Vogtland Arena. In the following seasons, Klingenthal was also given the honor of hosting the ski jumping World Cup opener.
