Pawel Vladimirovich Karelin ( Russian Павел Владимирович Карелин ; born April 27, 1990 in Gorky ; † October 9, 2011 in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ) was a Russian ski jumper .
Career
Pavel Karelin started for the club in his hometown of Nizhny Novgorod. He made his international debut on December 12, 2006 at the Ski Jumping Continental Cup competition in Rovaniemi . He finished 65th and was unable to stay in the Continental Cup squad due to poor results, despite a 28th place in Planica . Therefore, from the jumping in Chaux-Neuve, he was used four times in the FIS Cup , the lowest international competition series in ski jumping. On February 3 and 4, 2007, he took second place twice in Chaux-Neuve and fourth and first place in the jumping in Zakopane on February 17 and 18, 2007. As a result of the good results in the FIS Cup, he was used again in the Continental Cup, where he performed significantly better than before in the jumping in Oberhof on February 24, 2007 with sixth place and achieved his best placement in this competition series so far. After the Russian national coach Wolfgang Steiert became aware of Karelin, he was allowed to start in the Summer Grand Prix 2007 and was able to establish contact with the world's best on October 6, 2007 in Klingenthal with second place. After this success, Karelin was able to earn a regular place in the Russian team thanks to good performances in the Ski Jumping World Cup 2007/2008 .
In addition, Pawel Karelin took part in the 2007 World Youth Championship in Tarvisio . There he placed 33rd in the individual competition on the normal hill, with the team he reached tenth place. At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , Karelin retired as 33rd in jumping from the normal hill in the first round.
The 2010/2011 season was very successful for him. After three top ten placements in Engelberg , he achieved his only podium finish with second place in a very windy competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .
He died on October 9, 2011 as a driver in a car accident on the M-7 highway from Moscow to Ufa near Nizhny Novgorod, in which a total of four cars were involved. The police investigation revealed that Karelin was driving under the influence of alcohol.
