Vitaly Valeryevich Denissow ( Russian Виталий Валерьевич Денисов ; born February 27, 1976 in Barnaul ) is a former Russian cross-country skier .

Career

Denisov, who had won gold with the Russian cross-country relay at the Junior World Championships in Asiago, Italy in 1996 , made his debut in the World Cup in Kavgolovo in January 1997 , finishing in 69th place over 30 km freestyle. He got his first World Cup points in March 1998 in Lahti with 19th place over 30 km classic. In the 1998/99 season he achieved his first top ten placement in the World Cup with eighth place over 15 km. With the relay he came third in Falun and second in Oslo . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1999 in Ramsau am Dachstein , he took 38th place over 10 km classic, 27th place over 50 km classic and 25th place in the pursuit race. In the 1999/2000 season he made it into the points 12 times in the World Cup, including twice in the top ten and thus reached 32nd place in the overall World Cup. After third place in the relay in Santa Caterina Valfurva at the beginning of the 2000/01 season, he achieved two top ten positions in the individual World Cup and won the relay in Falun. At the highlight of the season, the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 in Lahti, he won the bronze medal in the skiathlon . He also took 15th place over 15 km classic and fourth place with the relay. He finished the season in 34th place in the overall World Cup. At the beginning of the following season he was second in the relay in Davos . In the further course of the season he came in the points six times. He achieved his only podium finish in the World Cup individual with second place in the 30 km mass start race in Val di Fiemme and finished 37th in the overall World Cup at the end of the season. His best results at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City were sixth place in the relay and fifth place in the skiathlon. In his last active season, 2002/03, he achieved three placements in the top ten and came in 38th place in the overall World Cup. His best results at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme were ninth place over 15 km classic and fourth place with the relay.
