Sami Repo (born November 8, 1971 in Simpele ) is a former Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Repo, who started for the Joensuun Kataja, appeared for the first time internationally at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1991 in Reit im Winkl . There he won the bronze medal over 10 km classic. He ran his first World Cup races in Lahti in February 1992 , which he finished in 47th place over 15 km classic and 15th place with the relay. In March 1993 he achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup with third place in the relay in Lahti. He got his first World Cup points in January 1994 in Kawgolowo with the 11th place over 15 km classic. When he first took part in the Olympics in 1994 in Lillehammer , he came 37th over 50 km classic. In March 1994 he won his first World Cup victory with the relay in Lahti. In the 1994/95 season he won the season in Oslo and took second place in Sappada and third place in Sapporo with the season . His best result in the World Cup singles was 12th place over 15 km freestyle in Sapporo. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1995 in Thunder Bay , he won 43rd place over 50 km freestyle. At the beginning of the 1995/96 season he reached Vuokatti with third place over 10 km classic, his first podium in the individual World Cup. In the further course of the season he came in the points in all participations in the World Cup and thus finished 17th in the overall World Cup. He also won with the relay in Davos and in Nové Město and achieved third place with the relay in Oslo. In the following season he ran three times under the top ten in the World Cup singles and won each season in Kiruna and Davos. At the peak of the season, the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1997 in Trondheim , he finished 19th over 10 km classic and 13th place in the subsequent pursuit. He finished the season in 15th place in the overall World Cup and ninth in the Sprint World Cup.

In the 1997/98 season Repo finished second in the relay in Beitostølen and won his seventh World Cup in Lahti . In the World Cup singles he came in ten participations, four times in the points and reached the 37th place in the overall World Cup. At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano , he won the bronze medal with the relay. He also achieved 34th place over 30 km classic, 20th place in the pursuit and 18th place over 10 km classic. After third place in the 10 km freestyle in Muonio at the beginning of the 1998/99 season, he ran five times in the points and finished 30th in the overall World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1999 in Ramsau am Dachstein , he came 62nd place over 10 km classic, 36th place in the pursuit and fifth place with the relay. In March 1999, he finished second in the relay in Falun . In the following season, he scored points in all 14 World Cup singles. He achieved three top ten placements and at the end of the season he finished 17th in the overall World Cup. In addition, he took second place with the relay in Lahti in March 2000. At the beginning of the 2000/01 season he ran in Beitostølen with the relay and over 10 km freestyle each in second place. This was followed by six results in the points and at the end of the season the 23rd place in the overall World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 in Lahti, he finished 11th over 15 km in both classic and skiathlon . His best results at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City were 21st place in the sprint and 11th place in the relay. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme , he achieved 42nd place over 15 km classic, 25th place in the skiathlon and sixth place with the relay. He ran his last World Cup race in March 2004 in Lahti over 15 km classic, which he finished prematurely. At Finnish championships he won three times over 50 km (1997, 1998, 2002), twice in the pursuit (2002, 2003), twice with the relay (2001, 2004) and in 2004 over 10 km and over 30 km respectively.
