Hietamäki had his first international success at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1989 in Vang . There he won the bronze medal over 10 km. He ran his first of a total of 74 World Cup individual races in Lahti in March 1990 , which he finished in 67th place in the double pursuit . In December 1992 he got his first World Cup points in Ramsau am Dachstein with 20th place over 10 km freestyle and tenth place in the subsequent pursuit. The tenth place was his best individual placement in the World Cup and repeated this placement in January 1999 in Nové Město over 15 km classic. At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , he came 40th over 50 km classic. In early March 1994 he was third with the relay at the World Cup in Lahti. In the 1994/95 season he made it into the points five times and achieved his best overall placement with 35th place in the overall World Cup. He also won in Nové Město and Oslo with the relay, in the Continental Cup in Ilomantsi over 10 km classic and in Finlandia-hiihto over 50 km classic. At the season highlight, the 1995 World Championships in Thunder Bay , he won the silver medal with the relay. He also achieved 14th place over 30 km classic there. In December 1995 he took first place with the relay at the World Cup in Davos . At the 1997 World Championships in Trondheim and at the 1999 World Championships in Ramsau am Dachstein, he started classic over 50 km, but finished both races prematurely. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City he came in 43rd place over 15 km classic, 31st place over 50 km classic and 11th place with the relay. In the following year he finished 43rd place over 15 km classic and 26th place in the 30 km mass start race at the world championships in Val di Fiemme . He completed his last World Cup race in November 2005 in Kuusamo , which he finished classically in 61st place over 15 km.
