Thorsten Schmitt (born September 20, 1975 in Villingen-Schwenningen ) is a former German Nordic combined athlete .

Career

Schmitt, who started for SC Furtwangen , started with Nordic combined in 1988 . When he was 14, he went to the Furtwangen boarding school / Otto Hahn Gymnasium Furtwangen . Since 1990 he has also been practicing the sport on a national level and since 1997 on an international level. Until 1995 he was part of Frank Erlbeck's C-Combined team, then moved up to Hermann Weinbuch's prospective Olympic team for Nagano in 1998 . Shortly before the games on January 18, 1998, Schmitt made his debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup in Chaux-Neuve and achieved his first World Cup points with 12th place. At the Olympic Games he started in the team competition and finished in sixth place together with Matthias Looß , Ronny Ackermann and Jens Deimel . Shortly after the Olympics, Schmitt was diagnosed with testicular cancer. After an operation and several chemotherapies, however, Schmitt was able to start again in the next season. From January 2000 he was back in the World Cup squad and reached the points again towards the end of the month in Liberec . In February he took part in the team competition in the B World Cup in Baiersbronn and was second on the podium for the first time with the team.

At the Summer Grand Prix in August 2000, Schmitt surprised with fifth place in Klingenthal , but could not build on that in Stams and Berchtesgaden , which is why he did not get past 27th place overall. After he came into the World Cup squad in January 2001 in the 2000/01 season and remained without great success, Schmitt first started in the B World Cup at the beginning of the 2001/02 season. He achieved his second podium with third place in the sprint race in Taivalkoski . At the end of December Schmitt switched back to the World Cup. In January he achieved his best individual World Cup result of his career with fifth place in Liberec. As a result, Schmitt was found in the points at almost every World Cup race. In the Sprint World Cup he was able to celebrate his best result so far in the 2002/03 season with rank 20 overall. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme , he won the team silver medal together with Georg Hettich , Björn Kircheisen and Ronny Ackermann.

Almost a year later, in February 2004, he and the team finished second on the podium for the first time at an A World Cup at the Team World Cup in Oberstdorf . He repeated this success with the team on February 11, 2005 in Pragelato . In the overall individual World Cup, he finally achieved his best result in the 2005/06 season with 18th place overall. At the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin he was part of the German squad, but was the only combined skier not to be used.

On January 31, 2007, he announced the end of his career. The reason for the decision is the non-nomination for the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo, Japan . Before that, he was able to win World Cup points again with 16th place in the sprint at the World Cup in Seefeld in Tirol and finally finished the 2006/07 season 31st in the overall standings.
