The German Nordic Ski Championships 1998 were held from January 28th to February 1st, 1998 in Ruhpolding , Bavaria . The venue was the Chiemgau Arena , which offers several cross-country trails and ski jumps . The ski jumping runs were held from the normal hill on the Toni-Plenk-Schanze, while those from the large hill were held on the Großer Zirmbergschanze .
In addition to some competitions in Ruhpolding, the German cross-country skiing championships were also held in Zwiesel on March 21st and 22nd . There the champions of the club relay, the winner of the ski marathon and the winner of the long distance distance were determined.
The national coaches were Eberhard Klessen in cross-country skiing , Hermann Weinbuch in Nordic combined and Reinhard Heß in ski jumping .

The pursuit over 5 km classic and 10 km freestyle was won by Constanze Blum , who had already won the 5 km cross-country skiing and was the first to go on the trail . While Kati Wilhelm was also able to maintain her second place, last year's double champion Anke Schulze improved from fifth to third place.

Constanze Blum and Kati Wilhelm from SC Motor Zella-Mehlis also proved their dominance in the last individual competition over 30 kilometers in the skating technique and came in first and second. Viola Bauer from Saxony followed in third place, more than a minute behind . Isabel Klaus ( SSV Geyer ) won the juniors ahead of Claudia Künzel ( SV Oberwiesenthal ) and Jana Richter ( VSC Klingenthal ).

The Saxon cross-country skiers won the team of Isabel Klaus , Antje Windis , Viola Bauer and Claudia Künzel relay gold over 4 × 5 km from Bavaria. The fastest of all relay runners was Bauer, which gave the Saxon quartet a decisive lead. It was run in both free and classic style.

After Andreas Schlütter was sent out on the trail as the leader, his teammate René Sommerfeldt was able to catch up with him and finally win the pursuit race, which was held for the first time, with a 45.2 second lead.

As in the previous year, Peter Schlickenrieder won the competition over 30 kilometers. While this was carried out in 1997 in the skating technique, this time the 30 km cross-country skiing took place as a mass start in the classic technique. Both the fight for first place and the bronze medal turned out to be exciting. Ultimately, Torsten Schreier Schlickenrieder had to admit defeat, whereas Janko Neuber was able to prevail in third against Michael Hoffmann and Sebastian Kleiner .

The 50 km ski marathon in free technique on the Bretterschachten near Bodenmais ended with a favorite . With a running time of 2: 14: 04.4 hours, Johann Mühlegg prevailed with more than fourteen seconds against the German champion over 10 km classic Andreas Schlütter .

The men's relay of the clubs over 3 × 10 km was not only a special one because of the victory of WSV Oberweißbrunn over the favorite relay of SC Monte Kaolino Hirschau , but also because of the 42-time German champion Jochen Behle , who was the last race of his 20-year-olds Career denied. As part of the Hirschau club relay, 37-year-old Willinger said goodbye to the cross-country ski trails by winning the silver medal.

While Sven Koch won his first championship title, 19-year-old Christoph Grillhösl won the title of German junior champion. When the combined individual sprint was held for the first time, Koch broke away from individual master Jens Deimel under floodlights on the last climb on the 7.8 km long course and won by 3.8 seconds. Before that, Deimel had set his hill record with 93.5 m, but was then surpassed by Grillhösl and the Klingenthal Olympic starter Matthias Looß (94 m each).

There was also a debutant German champion from the large hill. After jumping 108 and 112 meters , Sven Hannawald won confidently ahead of defending champion Dieter Thoma , before a large gap on third-placed Gerd Siegmund revealed the problems of German ski jumping at the top. The bronze medalist from the normal hill Michael Wagner only finished 16th after a catastrophic run and jumps on 72 and 106 meters.

The team competition was dominated by the Baden-Württemberg ski associations . The first team consisting of Dieter Thoma , Sven Hannawald , Martin Schmitt and Hansjörg Jäkle won confidently with a lead of more than a hundred points. The defending champions from Thuringia competed in the same line-up as in the previous year, but ended up in third place, far behind the two teams from Baden-Württemberg.
