The German Nordic Ski Championships 1957 were held from February 20 to 24, 1957 in Altenau , Lower Saxony . The ski jumping runs were held on the Große-Altenau-Schanze , which was modernized in the run-up to the championships, so that the elevation of the discharge tower moved the critical point from 65 to 70 meters. The championships were originally planned for February 6th to 10th, but the German Ski Association postponed the event for a fortnight due to the unfavorable snow conditions. 170 athletes, including all previous year's champions, registered for the seven competitions.

After she had already won the women's cross-country skiing competition for the Kurikkala Cup a week earlier in St. Imier, Switzerland , the favored Rita Czech-Blasl successfully defended her championship title. Czech-Blasl mastered the 10 kilometers for the first time in less than forty minutes, which the winner attributed to the "easy" route.

Other sources give a running distance of 5 kilometers for women’s cross-country skiing. The Passauer Neue Presse , however, speaks several times of 10 kilometers.

Siegfried Weiß won the first competition of the German Nordic Ski Championships in 1957 in cross-country skiing over 30 kilometers, relegating last year's winner Helmut Hagg to second place, four minutes behind. While the participants found an easy route through forest and raised bogs, they were particularly troubled by the onset of snowfall, which forced some athletes to wax their skis during the competition.

With the fastest 15 km cross-country skiing time in the history of the German Ski Championships, Siegfried Weiß also won the second individual title in Altenau . White set himself apart from his greatest opponent Josef Schiffner , especially in the long uphill stretches and in the final sprint, which he started 200 meters from the finish. In the winner's interview, Weiß blamed his Finnish coach Osmo Hillebrand for his success.

The 4 × 10 kilometer relay race ended with a dead race between the Black Forest and Bavaria, so that two winners were chosen. The start and finish point of the trail was in the Torfhaus district , the highest settlement in Lower Saxony. Although the Bavarian final runner Helmut Hagg started the race with a lead of 2 seconds, he could not maintain this against the most outstanding athlete of the championships Siegfried Weiß . The race was not only dominated at the top by the teams of the Bavarian and Black Forest associations, but also in the following places.

The Nordic Combined Championships were split over two days, so that the jumping run was held on Friday and the cross-country skiing on Saturday. The former Austrian champion Josef Schiffner first won the combined jump, where he jumped 64 and 67 meters with a short run. The Bavarian representatives Eberhard Plenk and Helmut Böck shared second place . Ultimately, Schiffner was the winner of the "Golden Ski" by a large margin. For the 26-year-old from Frankfurt, the win was already the third major success of the season after winning the international ski races in Le Brassus and the FIS week in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

The special jump was the conclusion and highlight of the ski championships. Around 20,000 spectators were offered an exciting competition on the converted K-70 hill on Mühlenberg, in which the favorite and Olympic fourth-placed Max Bolkart was able to prevail. The longest jump of the day was achieved by Helmut Bleier , who set a new hill record with his 70 meters.
