Josef "Sepp" Maier (born May 11, 1935 in St. Peter ; † June 8, 2012 there ) was a German farmer and cross-country skier .

Life

Josef Maier, one of four sons of the farmer Karl Maier, grew up on his parents' "Rohrerhof". After his career as a cross-country skier, Josef Maier took over his parents' farm in St. Peter in 1966 , which he in turn passed on to his son Christoph in 1996. From 1984 to 1994 he was a member of the parish council of St. Peter.

From 1957 to 1961 he won nine titles for SC St. Peter as German champion in cross-country skiing over 15 and 30 kilometers as well as the marathon distance of 50 kilometers and with the national relay. He also won six second places in the national championships in 1960/1963. With the "Maier family relay" of the brothers Rudolf, Fritz, Sepp and Hans, he became the Black Forest relay champion in Schönwald in 1959 and German vice-champion of the club relay in 1961.

At the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley , Josef Maier finished 26th in the 30 kilometer race. At the Finnish ski games in Lahti in 1961, he was the best German cross-country skier over 15 kilometers; also on Holmenkollen best overall German over 15 km. In 1962 he took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane .

In 1966 he became an honorary member of the St. Peter Ski Club. In 1975 Josef Maier was awarded the Golden Badge of Honor by the Black Forest Ski Association.
