Walter Demel was also the fastest athlete on the 15 km track and thus secured his twelfth championship title. The large time differences at the top suggest that only Demel counted among the top class by international standards. 143 athletes started at a temperature of minus 3 degrees. The high number can be explained by the fact that both the combined skiers and the special cross-country skiers completed their 15 kilometers at the same time.

Date: Wednesday February 3, 1965

Walter Demel won the first competition of the German Nordic Ski Championships in 1965 in cross-country skiing over 30 kilometers. The 29-year-old police officer of the Federal Border Police won his eleventh German championship. The field of participants consisted of 83 athletes who faced a highly acclaimed cross-country ski run at 5 degrees Celsius. The hard, frozen snow meant no wax problems. The big surprise of the race was Josef Niedermeier , who finished third, relegating Siegfried Weiß to fourth place.

With a lead of more than five minutes, Walter Demel once again demonstrated his dominance in German cross-country skiing . The 29-year-old Bavarian outclassed the 73 participants and was again able to win all individual titles at the Nordic Ski Championships, although he was 46 seconds behind Karl Buhl after the first 16.5-kilometer loop . Georg Thoma was unable to intervene in the battle for the medal ranks, who surprisingly registered for the competition and ultimately crossed the finish line with a time of 3:17:47 hours, more than 22 minutes behind Demel. The difficult route was in the area of the silver pond and the Hahnenklee cliffs .

The Nordic Combined Championships were split over two days, so that the jumping run was held on Friday and the cross-country skiing on Saturday. Georg Thoma , who had just returned from a back injury, won the "Golden Ski" for the eighth time in a row. Already after the jump the championship title did not seem to take away from him, because after jumps on 76 and 77.5 meters with 32 participants he was in second place behind the special jumper Heini Ihle , who in his three attempts had distances of 77, 78 and 80 Meters scored. The Mannheim Wolfgang Schüller (73, 74 m) followed after jumping in third place. In the end, Thoma left no doubts about his victory in cross-country skiing and not only achieved the best combination run time, but also finished fifth in the cross-country skiers.

The 23-year-old Heini Ihle from Oberstdorf was the German champion , confirming the position he had earned in the previous season. He reached 80 meters twice and missed the hill record by only one meter each time. The Nordic combined athlete Georg Thoma came second in front of the hill record holder Franz Keller from Nesselwang . The jumping took place in front of 15,000 spectators. The competition was overshadowed by the fall of Axel Zerlaut , who lost control during training on Saturday and hit his head on his ski. Ultimately, the DSV was able to give the all-clear, so that Zehrlaut did not suffer any further damage apart from a concussion .
