The German Nordic Ski Championships 1973 took place from February 3rd to 11th in Braunlage and Reit im Winkl . Originally, all competitions were supposed to be held in the Harz Mountains , but severe weather conditions - which, among other things, turned the cross-country trails into water-filled "tram tracks" - made relocation necessary. This must be described as a unique organizational masterpiece. However, the 50 km ski marathon fell victim to the relocation, which was instead made up for on Sunday, March 4th as part of the Bavarian championships in Bayrischzell .

The championship jumping on the large hill took place on February 18th in Neustadt . Because of the bad weather conditions neither in Braunlage nor in Reit im Winkl could a competition be held on the normal hill, the competition was moved from the normal hill to Schonach on February 17th .

Since the weather forecast did not improve, the championships were continued for a short time in Reit im Winkl, 710 kilometers away . Already after the ski jumping on the Franz-Haslberger-Schanze , the title defense of the Nesselwanger Franz Keller seemed secured. Because with jumps on 79.5 and 80 meters, he won the combined jump ahead of Robert Rosenfelder and Hans Rudhart . The Bundeswehr Sergeant Keller only showed the fourth best mileage over 15 kilometers (59: 30.28 min), but in the end his fourth title in a row could not be stolen from him. The fastest runner was Hans Rudhart (57: 33.42 min) ahead of the Black Forests Rainer Klumpp (58: 43.09 min) and Urban Hettich (59: 17.19 min).
