The Skiklub Winterberg eV 1907 is a winter sports club from Winterberg in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The Sauerland Ski Club was founded on February 23, 1907 by the members of the “Society Recreation” bowling club in the Hotel Leisse in Winterberg. The first chairman of the association was from 1907 to 1920 the chief forester Karl Hagemann. After a re-establishment on November 17, 1945, the winter sports club from the Hochsauerlandkreis was called Skiklub Winterberg. After initially there were only Alpine skiing and Nordic skiing departments in competitive sports , a biathlon department was added in the 1980s .

The club achieved its greatest team success at the German Nordic Ski Championships in 1976, when the club relay won the championship title. The club's first female world champion was Maren Hammerschmidt around 110 years after the club was founded with the biathlon relay.

The winter sports resort of Winterberg, located on the Kahler Asten , benefits from the SK Winterberg and its sports facilities as a popular tourist destination. In general, skiing is still an important source of income for the city and its residents. In this context, Winterberg can advertise with the title of the oldest winter sports location in West Germany.

The Winterberg location is not only of central importance for the region, but also plays an important role for the entire German Ski Association . Together with Willingen in Hesse , ski jumpers and Nordic combined athletes are being trained in a targeted manner for older pupils and early youth. While the West German Ski Association in Winterberg employs two full-time trainers for Nordic Combined and also takes on the training of ski jumpers in early school age, the Hessian Ski Association in Willingen mainly works in the ski jumping area and with the oldest school and early youth classes. This separation at the DSV federal base for the youngsters has existed since the 2007/08 season.

After the insurance salesman Rainer Berkenkopf resigned as chairman of the ski club in 2011, the position was no longer filled. Since then, Joachim Wahle has held the highest position as Vice Chairman.

Sports facilities

St. Georg Schanze

St.-Georg-Schanze on the southwest slope of Herrloh

The heart of the ski jumpers and Nordic combiners is the St. Georg Schanze , on which national and international competitions (e.g. in the Alpine Cup ) are regularly held. Especially since the normal hill with the K-point at 80 meters was converted into a year-round hill in 1999 and 2000 - i.e. it can be covered with plastic matting - there are excellent opportunities for training young athletes. The ski jump can be used both in winter and in summer on a stainless steel track.

The event arena at the Schanze has a floor space of around 5,000 m² and can accommodate around 20,000 people. The turnstile can be passed at any time for one euro.

Plastic ski jumping facility at Herrloh

In addition to the St. Georg-Schanze, four smaller plastic covered hills were rebuilt and renovated in 2001 to promote young talent. These are also located on Herrloh . It is a K 8 with mat track, K 24 with mat and aluminum track, K 34 with aluminum track and a K 44 with ski line summer and winter track. Since the K24 ski jump became lazy and rotten, it had to be renovated in August 2020.

Biathlon stadium Bremberg

At the Bremberg at an altitude of 750 to 800  m above sea level. NHN is also home to the cross-country and biathlon stadium. A total of five cross-country trails are available, each with a distance of 1 km, 2 km, 3 km, 4 km and 5 km, on which you can train in classic style and free technique. With eight crossbow stands, 16 illuminated air rifle stands and ten illuminated small caliber stands, nothing stands in the way of competitions.

For the modernization of the biathlon facility, the State Secretary for Sport and Volunteering Andrea Milz presented the SK Winterberg with a grant of 49,896 euros in August 2020.

Winterberg ski area

The slopes of the Winterberger Skiliftkarussell do not belong to the association, but like the slopes of the Altastenberg Skikarussell they are used by the alpine racing athletes for training.

Others

The ski club publishes an annual information leaflet for members with the Ski Express . To mark the 100th anniversary, the association published the chronicle “100 Years of the Winterberg Ski Club 1907 - 2007” in 2007 and celebrated the event with a big anniversary ball. SK Winterberg now offers its own app.

The “Schanzentreff” at St. Georg Schanze serves as the club's bar.
