The Winterberg ski lift carousel near Winterberg in the Hochsauerland district of North Rhine-Westphalia is a winter sports area in the Rothaar Mountains . It has joined forces with neighboring ski areas, including the one near Altastenberg , the Postwiesen ski area near Neuastenberg and the Willingen ski area to form the Wintersport-ArenaCARD ticket network for the Sauerland winter sports arena .

The term “carousel” refers to a coherent area of ski slopes and lifts , which, comparable to a ski swing , connects several valleys and mountains.

Geographical location

The ski lift carousel is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park west to southwest of Winterberg at an altitude of around 590 to 810  m . In the area through which the Büre flows , these mountains are located - sorted by height in meters (m) above sea level (NHN):

  • Poppenberg ( 745.8  m )
  • Herrloh ( 732.9  m ) and
  • Sürenberg (Bremberg-northeast foothills)

The ski lift carousel has a west-east extension of around 2.5 kilometers (km) and a north-south extension of around 2 km. The lowest point is the valley station of the cap chairlift at 590  m , the highest point is the mountain station of a lift on the Bremberg (approx.  810  m ), as the Kahle Asten is not accessible with lifts up to the summit.

Lifts and slopes

Currently (as of 2019) the ski area has a total of 26 lifts, of which 24 are for skiing and 1 (lift no.20) for tobogganers. The latter can also use the 4-seater chairlift on Astenstrasse (lift no. 1) together with skiers. The transport performance of all systems adds up to around 37,000 people per hour and is mainly generated by high-capacity chairlifts . The lifts for skiing that open up the six mountains mentioned above include:

  • two 8-seater chairlifts
  • six 6-seater chairlifts
  • four 4-seater chairlifts
  • a 2-seater chairlift
  • eight drag lifts, including three cable and practice lifts
  • four conveyor belts

The first 8-seater chairlift in Germany was put into service in the Skiliftkarussell in 2012, which has an underground valley station as a special feature. The latest facility is a detachable 6-seater chairlift on the Büre-Herrloh-Hang and another 8-seater chairlift on the Poppenberghang, which will start operating in winter 2015/2016. In the years 2010 to 2015, 8 new chairlifts, 1 drag lift and 1 conveyor belt were built. The ski lift carousel thus has the most modern inventory and the highest number of chairlifts of all German ski areas.

According to the operator, the ski area has 32 runs with a total length of 27.5 km. According to the level of difficulty, 14 km are classified as easy (blue), 12 km as medium (red) and 1.5 km as difficult (black). With 360 snow guns , 28 runs can be covered with artificial snow over a length of 26 km. The longest runs include the connection from the Bremberg summit to the Büre (approx. 1.6 km) as well as the forest aisle on the cap (1.2 km), the largest difference in altitude is overcome by the runs on the cap - slalom slope, forest aisle and panorama run - around 180 m.

For mountain bikers , a chairlift and a drag lift run here in summer. The lift operators on Poppenberg set up the first German mountain board park in the summer months . There is a direct connection to the ski lift carousel from the federal roads 236 and 480 , which form a joint section between Winterberg and Neuastenberg west of Winterberg and lead through the Herrloh tunnel . While the tunnel passes under the exit areas of the ski slopes on the Herrloh, which are served by three tow lifts, a ski bridge and a 6-seater chairlift cross the joint federal road section near Bremberg.
