The cap in the district of Winterberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis , North Rhine-Westphalia , is 776  m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Rothaargebirge . He is well known for his international competitions on the Winterberg bobsleigh run .

location

The cap rises in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park as part of its summit about 2.2 km southeast of the center of the Winterberg core town. Its neighboring mountains are the Poppenberg (745.8 m) in the north, the Herrloh (732.9 m) in the north-northeast, the Molbecke (722.9 m) in the east, the Wetzstein (771.6 m) in the south, the Kahle Asten (841.9 m) in the west and the Bremberg (approx. 810 m) in the northwest.

On the north-eastern flank of the mountain, near the Winterberg bobsleigh run, with the approximately east-flowing Silbecke, a small tributary of the Nuhne flows east of the mountain . In the southwest the Sonneborn passes the mountain as the right Nuhne-Quellbach.

Natural allocation

The cap belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33) in the main unit Rothaargebirge (with Hochsauerland ) (333) and in the subunit Winterberger Hochland (333.5) to the natural area Astenberg (333.54), with its eastern flank in the subunit Hohe Seite (333.7 ) falls.

Protected areas and flora

The northwestern part of the Guenninghauser Mark nature reserve ( CDDA no. 164022; designated 1965; 2.27  km² in size) stretches southwest around the cap, in the Sonneborntal, and the northwestern part of the Upper NSG lies a little east of the mountain along a Nuhne source stream Nuhnetal (NSG No. 389849; 2008; 27.52  ha ). The landscape protection area of ​​the city of Winterberg extends to the west and south flanks of the mountain (CDDA no. 325127; 1994; 75.32 km²). In the Sonneborntal there are areas of the fauna-flora-habitat area Schluchtwald Angstbecke and Gümminghauser Mark (FFH No. 4817-302; 2.46 km²) that extend right up to its flanks . The partly wooded mountain slopes are predominantly spruce forests.

Tourism and facilities

On the flanks of the cap lies the Winterberg bobsleigh run, which begins a little below its summit ; on the summit is the bobsleigh house, which is used, among other things, for gastronomic purposes, which was destroyed by fire on June 6, 2009 but then reopened. In addition to ski slopes with ski lifts from the Winterberg ski lift carousel , there are also numerous sites of the Erlebnisbergkap leisure company , such as the Winterberg bike park , the Panorama Adventure Bridge , a summer toboggan run and a climbing forest . About 160 m west-north-west of the summit there is a transmission tower a few meters west of a 772.6  m high point , and to the north-west is a campsite . The panorama restaurant is located between the campsite and the bob house .

traffic

The federal highways 236 and 480 run a little northwest past the cap as part of a common section , with the former also passing eastwards within the Nuhnetal after branching off from the latter (in Winterberg). The high elevations of the mountain can be reached from the north-north-west via a dead-end street starting on the B 236/480 (called Kappenrundweg / cap ) with a parking lot there.
