The Sonneborn in the Rothaargebirge is the left, northwestern and with 7.8 km length the longest source brook of the Nuhne in the Hochsauerlandkreis in North Rhine-Westphalia .

course

The Sonneborn rises in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park around 3 km west-southwest of downtown Winterberg and around 2 km north-northeast of Neuastenberg . Its source is on the northeast slope of the Kahler Asten near the federal road 236 at the junction of the state road  640, which leads to Altastenberg , at 748  m above sea level. NN .

The stream flows mainly in a south-easterly direction, leaving the B 236, which it meets again down the valley to unite in the Winterberg district of Züschen with the shorter Ahre at an altitude of 463  m to form Nuhne .

Hydropower

The water power of the Sonneborn was previously used at hammers and mills , which is still evident today in the buildings.

sport and freetime

The Winterberg ski lift carousel is located to the northeast of the Sonneborn spring, and the Winterberg bobsleigh run is located northeast of the upper reaches of the brook on Bergkap ( 776  m above sea level ) . There are cycle and hiking trails in the wooded Bachtal valley.
