The 15-km cross-country skiing was surprisingly won by Georg Zipfel from Freiburg, who was only 18 years old , relegating serial winner Walter Demel to second place. In fact, even second place was in danger for a long time, but Gerhard Gehring fell a few hundred meters from the finish on the climb and had to admit defeat to Demel in the finish sprint.

At the start of the Nordic ski championships in Reit im Winkl, the athletes started the 30 km cross-country skiing on the Hemmersuppenalm at an altitude of around 1400 meters. Since Walter Demel had waxed incorrectly due to a change in the weather, the Zwiesel city council initially had a hard time before ultimately winning the race by two minutes. The long-time leading Swabian Gerhard Gehring was runner-up . The trail described Demel as "tailor-made and easily."

The 50 km ski marathon in Neubau was characterized by racing tasks by top athletes. Of the 48 runners who started, only 33 finished. Defending champion Wilfried Wagner from SC Zwiesel ended the race prematurely as did Gerhard Gehring and the favored Walter Demel . The latter later commented on this decision with the following words: “It was of no value to grind yourself on this difficult trail with a blunt ski. I wanted to save my strength for the German ski championships in Reit im Winkl. ” Hartmut Döpp from SK Winterberg finally became the new German champion .

The final runner Gerhard Gehring played a large part in the success of SC Fischen at the 4 × 10 km club relay championship in the Fichtelgebirge . Despite a medical prohibition due to a frontal sinus suppuration, the 26-year-old customs officer started and finally ran the victorious second-fastest time. The absolute best time of the day, however, was set by Walter Demel from Zwiesel with 40: 35.8 minutes. Until the last change, the WSV Reit im Winkl team had been in the lead, but the experienced Edi Lengg was unable to maintain this position. The defending champions from Breitnau were also unable to repeat their previous year's performance and ended up in fifth place. There were 30 seasons at the start.

The jumping from the Franz-Haslberger-Schanze laid the foundation for the success of Franz Keller , who won the championship title: “My jump start was decisive. Cross-country skiing was mediocre, ”said the 27-year-old Nesselwanger after his fourth title win. After the jumping run, plagued by gusts of wind and drizzle, runner-up Ralph Pöhland should have run one and a half minutes faster than Keller.
