Georg Thoma won the “Golden Ski” for the sixth time in a row . Thoma (53 and 56 meters) was only in fourth place after the jump and was a bit behind Edi Lengg (48.5 / 52.5 m), who was considered the strongest cross-country skier among the combiners. Ski jumping won Heini Ihle with jumps of 53 and 58 meters. While Ihle was classified as a weak cross-country skier, alongside Lengg, third and fifth placed Josef Zeller (48/53 m) and Roman Weidel (48/52 m) had a chance of winning the combined title. Ultimately, however, the series champion Thoma surprisingly defended his title after a great mileage (48: 58.8 minutes) and relegated Lengg (50: 14.6 min) to second place again, as in the previous year. In his interview with the winner, Thoma described the result as his greatest success since the Olympic victory in 1960.

After the reigning champion Helmut Wegscheider won the qualification round with a record distance of 101 meters ahead of Heini Ihle and Max Bolkart , he had to admit defeat in front of about 15,000 spectators on Sunday and take fourth place. The championship title was won by Georg Thoma , who was able to get an individual medal in all three disciplines. Also noteworthy was the conversion of some athletes to the “fish style”, with the jumper putting his hands close to his trousers.
