Rita Czech-Blasel (* 27 July 1934 in Freiburg as Rita Blasel ) is a former German cross-country skier .

Career

In the winter of 1953/54, the Czechoslovak Hans Czech , who had fled the communist system, noticed Rita Blasel because of her physical condition during a joint ski trip in the Black Forest. Hans Czech, who later married Rita Blasel, became her trainer. At her first competition in the winter of 1954/55 in St. Märgen , Czech-Blasel did not have any cross-country skis, so she used a circular saw to cut her alpine skis to the width of cross-country skis. She took first place. Czech aimed to lead them to the 1960 Winter Olympics . However, because of her high level of ambition, Rita Czech-Blasel managed to take part in the 1956 Olympic Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo . A few weeks later she won the German championship in Willingen and the Freiburg native was able to defend her title in the following twelve years.

At the Olympic Games in Squaw Valley in 1960 , she finished twelfth over 10 kilometers. The crowning glory of the year was a second place at Holmenkollen . Even four years later, she competed in the 1964 Winter Games in Innsbruck , where she narrowly missed the bronze medal with the relay.

After her career, she completed an apprenticeship as a sports teacher and went to school. However, she continued to be active in sport, including winning the first edition of the Engadin Skimarathon in 1969 and twice becoming Swiss cross-country skiing champion. In addition to her work as a sports teacher, she was also a city councilor in Freiburg.
