The 44th German Nordic Ski Championships took place from February 9 to 12, 1961 in Winterberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, at the foot of the Kahler Asten . The ski jumping runs were held on the St. Georg Schanze on Herrloh , the critical point of which was 64 meters. The cross-country runs were carried out on the trails near Winterberg.
In addition, on February 25 and 26, 1961, in the Kniebis region , which at that time still belonged to Baiersbronn , the championships in 50 km cross-country skiing and in the club relay took place. Except for the title in the club relay, representatives of the Black Forest were able to win all competitions.

The 15 km cross-country skiing was carried out under unfavorable conditions. The trail was equipped with “difficulties worthy of the championship”, but was measured at least one kilometer too short. In addition, the route was heavily iced over by frost during the night. Sepp Maier , who had been by far the best German cross-country skier for the entire winter, was best able to deal with these conditions . As the third of six Maier boys, this time he faced his younger brother Rudi Maier as the strongest competitor. The outsider Helmut Gerlach landed a surprise victory as third.

The surprise of the competition was the 25-year-old sergeant Walter Demel , who was still in the lead after the first 15 kilometers and finally came second.

Two weeks after the remaining competitions of the Nordic Ski Championships in 1961, the delegation of the Black Forest Ski Association was again unbeatable. So Sepp Maier was not only able to win the third individual title of the year, but the following four places were also occupied by Black Forests. The 67 athletes found a very varied route in the Kniebis area with changing snow conditions .

Rudi Maier from the Black Forest (39:19 min) was able to run a narrow seven seconds ahead of Bavarian Edi Lengg (39:26 min) as the starting runner , but the experienced Siegfried Weiß (37:47 min) lost almost a minute on Horst Möhwald (36:43 min), so that the Bavarian Ski Association was half in the lead. In the third lap, Helmut Eschle (37:23 min) surpassed himself and was able to overtake Sepp Achatz (38:26 min) 50 meters from the finish. The most outstanding athlete of the winter, Sepp Maier (37:08 min), was finally able to extend the Black Forest lead and take victory.

The Nordic Combined Championships were split over two days, so that the jumping run was held on Friday and the cross-country skiing on Saturday. The Olympic champion Georg Thoma (67 meters - hill record, 64 m) laid the foundation stone for winning the Golden Ski while jumping, because with 20 points ahead of the former German and Austrian champion Josef Schiffner (56 m, 59 m) he could a running time almost five minutes longer than its strongest rival Schiffner. In fact, in sleet and strong wind, Thoma only lost 57 seconds in the 15 km cross-country skiing on Schiffner, so that the Black Forest man became German champion in Nordic combined for the fourth time. The Bavarian champion Edi Lengg ran the best time of all combiners and moved up one place before the Swabian champion Axel Zerlaut and came third.

Georg Thoma was also able to win the German championship title by a large margin in ski jumping . Although 53 athletes started, the competition was rather weak due to the absence of some top athletes like Max Bolkart . Nevertheless, the approximately 4,000 spectators got to see a rarity when three jumpers shared second place with Edi Heilingbrunner , Wolfgang Happle and Helmut Reichertz . In addition, attention was directed to seventeen-year-old Wolfgang Schüller , who had come from the GDR to Schonach in the Black Forest a year earlier and who finally came in fifth. The Partenkirchen Helmut Kurz missed his chances of a top place when he could not stand his jump on 58.5 meters in the second round.
