The 36th German Nordic Ski Championships took place from February 6th to 8th, 1953 in the Black Forest cities of Freudenstadt and Baiersbronn . In order to create a starting point for the all-German ski championships in 1954, a delegation from the GDR also took part in the West German competitions for the first time. As the organizer, the German Ski Association spent around DM 130,000 on the ski festival. The state of Württemberg-Baden was also involved in the major preparations with a grant of DM 40,000. The main focus was on the ski jumping hills , so that the Ruhesteinschanze in Baiersbronn was rebuilt according to Heini Klopfer's plans, but ultimately not a venue for the ski jumping events. While the combined ski jump was held on the also converted Black Forest hill (K 55) , the special jumpers jumped on the Murgtalschanze (K 65). In addition, two trails were created, one of which was in the valley and the other in the mountains.

The 50 km cross-country skiing championships were held on February 15, 1953 in Willingen , North Hesse .

In the women's cross-country race over 10 kilometers, a strong field with 26 athletes started without the defending champion Else Amann . The East German runners in particular proved to be very strong, although they couldn't get past Hanni Gehring from Unterjoch either. The running track was in excellent shape in the early morning hours after the long snowfall had stopped that night. The trail was also extremely varied, so that uphill and downhill gradients alternated at the beginning, before the last kilometer had mostly flat terrain.

The battle for the "Golden Ski" was split in two. First the 15 km cross-country skiing was held before the combined ski jumping was carried out on Saturday. The defending champion Heinz Hauser had created a favorable starting position for himself as tenth among the specialists with a grade of 229.7 in cross-country skiing, which he was able to convert to a championship victory with 437.5 points in ski jumping with the widths of 42.5 and 40.5 meters . The leading combiner after cross-country skiing was Hermann Möchel , who, with jumps of 35.5 and 35 meters, fell back to fifth place in the overall standings. The East German athlete Cuno Werner , who was awarded the victory in Class I because Hauser started in the age group, took second place after the fourth-best combined cross-country run and the sixth-best combined jump.

The special jumping event was held at the end of the championships in front of 35,000 spectators. After the elimination jump on the Murgtalschanze had to be canceled due to heavy snow drift, the competition rounds could be carried out on Sunday. Former master Toni Brutscher from Oberstdorf fell in the first round and thus had no chance. The 23-year-old Sepp Hohenleitner became the champion .
