After the 50 km endurance run had failed the previous three years, a champion in the longest discipline was again determined in February 1961. Siegfried Weiß was able to secure the title in Altenau . Errors and shortcomings on the running route, which at around 45 kilometers was also significantly shorter than planned, caused criticism.

Association relay

Date: Sunday February 15, 1959

The 4 × 10 kilometer relay race was decided early on, as the second Bavarian runner Edi Lengg lost his way and had to accept a loss of time. The Black Forest Ski Association took the chance and was team champion again.

Georg Thoma successfully defended his championship title and received the "Golden Ski". After he had already won the combined jumping on Friday, he not only showed the best combination time with a running time of 57:07 minutes in the 15 km cross-country skiing, but even took fourth place among the cross-country specialists. Edi Lengg completed an outstanding cross-country skiing behind Thoma , which is why he was able to relegate the former winners Josef Schiffner and Helmut Böck to third and fourth place.

In the juniors, Walter Vogel from Reit im Winkl won ahead of Heinrich Schertel and Ernst Lauber .

On the Gebrüder-Wehrmann-Schanze the 31-year-old master painter Ewald Roscher won the competition in front of 25,000 spectators in front of the Gebirgsjägerfreiten Helmut Kurz . Last year's winner Max Bolkart lived up to his role as a favorite when he was in the lead with a jump of 66.5 meters after the first round. However, Bolkart was unable to make the second jump to 73.5 meters.
