Jelena Nikolajewna Buruchina ( Russian Елена Николаевна Бурухина ; born March 9, 1977 in Dolgoprudny ) is a former Russian cross-country skier .

Career

Buruchina first appeared internationally in February 1996 at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Asiago . There she just missed a medal as fourth in the 15 km freestyle. She ran her first World Cup race in January 1997 in Kavgolovo , which she finished in 46th place over 15 km freestyle. She got her first World Cup points in January 2000 in Moscow with 17th place over 15 km freestyle. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 in Lahti , she was sixth in the sprint. In March 2001 she was in the top ten four times in the World Cup. With fourth place over 15 km freestyle in Kavgolovo, she achieved her first top ten placement and with second place over 5 km freestyle in Borlänge, her first podium finish in the World Cup. The 2000/01 season she finished in 21st place in the overall World Cup. After second place with the relay in Kuopio at the beginning of the 2001/02 season, she achieved second place with the relay in Davos and third place in the 15 km mass start race in Ramsau am Dachstein . This was followed by six results in the World Cup and at the end of the season 28th place in the overall World Cup. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , she took 16th place in the sprint and 13th place in the 15 km mass start race. In the 2002/03 season she got eight points in the World Cup, including three times in the top ten and finished 30th in the overall World Cup. At the season highlight, the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Fiemme Valley , she won the bronze medal with the relay and the silver medal in the 30 km freestyle. In addition, she was seventh in the skiathlon . After taking a break in the 2003/04 season, she competed six times in the World Cup singles in the 2004/05 season. Her best placement was tenth place over 10 km freestyle in Reit im Winkl . In the following season, she finished seventh twice in distance races in the World Cup and thus reached 32nd place in the Distance World Cup. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Pragelato , she achieved 37th place in the skiathlon. At the beginning of the 2007/08 season, she started in Krasnogorsk for the first time in the Eastern Europe Cup and won her only victory in the 10 km freestyle. In the further course of the season she achieved three results in the points and at the end of the season she was 33rd in the Distance World Cup. In her last active seasons in 2008/09 and 2009/10 she took part in the Eastern Europe Cup. Her best placement was in February 2010 the 30th place in the Rybinsk skiathlon .
