Rudolf Freny

Rudolf Freny , actually Rudolf Freisauff von Neudegg , ( February 9, 1825 - January 23, 1893 in Hamburg ) was an Austrian opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Freny came from the Austrian noble family Freisauff von Neudegg. In Vienna he was tutored by court conductor Karl Stein . His career began with an eight-month engagement as a choir player in Vienna in 1849.

He made his stage debut in Znaim as "Kaspar" in Freischütz . After that he was at the opera houses of Budapest, Laibach, Lemberg and Olomouc. From 1855 to 1858 he worked at the Deutsches Theater in Prague, from 1858 to 1868 at the Dresden Court Opera.

In 1868 he was engaged at the city theater in Hamburg (debut on September 4, 1868 as "Figaro" in Figaro's wedding ), where he remained until his retirement on June 1, 1891. He was also made an honorary member of the Hamburg Theater.

Towards the end of his career, he increasingly limited himself to Buffo roles, with his roles as "Leporello" in Don Giovanni and "Beckmesser" in the Meistersinger particularly well received.

In the summer of 1891 he sang at the Salzburg Mozart Festival . He was also very much appreciated by Richard Wagner . Freny died shortly before his 78th birthday on January 23, 1893 in Hamburg.
