Already in the first competitions he scored 19 points and thus in the end the 61st place in the overall ranking. At the 1999 Junior World Championships in Saalfelden , Heer and the team won the silver medal in the team competition.

In the 1999/2000 season he launched successfully, it that on 5 February 2000 in Japanese Hakuba its debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup was. Since he was unable to achieve World Cup points in the first races, he continued to compete in the B World Cup, where he was able to steadily improve his performance. At the Swiss Championships in Nordic Combined in 2000 in Prémanon , France , he achieved the bronze medal behind Urs Kunz and Andreas Hurschler . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 2001 , he was part of the Swiss team. In the individual race, however, he did not start despite a report. In the team competition he achieved tenth place together with Andreas Hurschler, Ivan Rieder and Andy Hartmann . On December 1, 2001, Heer won World Cup points for the first time in Lillehammer . Shortly before that, he won silver behind Andy Hartmann at the Swiss Nordic Combined Championships in 2001 . On December 9, 2001, Heer reached sixth place at the World Cup in Štrbské Pleso for the first time a placement among the top ten. He also won World Cup points in the following races and again achieved sixth place in the Oberwiesenthal sprint .

At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , Heer came in 29th place in both sprints and singles. In the team competition he achieved seventh place together with Andreas Hurschler, Jan Schmid and Ivan Rieder. At the end of the current 2001/02 season he got more points, so that he finally finished 19th in the overall World Cup ranking. In the sprint ranking he reached 15th place. As in 2001, he again won silver at the Swiss Nordic Combined Championships in 2002 in Les Tuffes , France . The start of the new 2002/03 season went less well for Heer, so that he mostly clearly missed placements in the top ten. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme in 2003 , he reached 21st place in the sprint, 31st place in the individual and eighth place with the team in the team competition. After he again only achieved mediocre placements after the World Cup, he had to be satisfied with 36th place in the overall World Cup standings.

In the following two years he was only rarely able to bring his performance to the level of 2001 and mostly stayed in the constant range of places 20 to 30. At the Swiss Championships in Nordic Combined in 2003, however, he again won silver behind Ivan Rieder Individual competition. Also at the Swiss Championships in Nordic Combined in 2004 it was again the silver medal.

On February 11, 2005, Heer achieved third place in the team competition in Pragelato, the only World Cup podium of his career. After the world championship, he started again in the B World Cup for a year. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin he reached 20th place in the sprint and 24th place in the individual. With the team he just missed the medal ranks in the team competition with fourth place. After the Olympic Games, he started again in the World Cup and achieved World Cup points from the start. By the end of the 2005/06 season he achieved a placement among the top twenty and thus at the end of 2001/02 again 19th place in the overall World Cup ranking.

In the following year, Heer in Zakopane achieved eighth place in the mass start and was once again among the top ten for the first time. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo in 2007 , however, he was again unable to achieve any top positions and ended up taking 18th place in the sprint and 21st place in the Gundersen. With the team he reached fifth place in the team competition. At the Swiss Championships in Nordic Combined in 2007 , Heer won the title for the first time in his career. In the World Cup, his performance decreased again after the World Cup. It wasn't until the beginning of 2008 that he was able to place in the top twenty again. On August 1, 2008, Heer won his first Grand Prix competition in Einsiedeln . At the Swiss Nordic Combined Championships in 2008 in Einsiedeln, Heer won the gold medal in the individual ahead of Seppi Hurschler and Joel Bieri .

In Liberec he reached 14th place on the normal hill and 28th place on the large hill at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Gundersen. In the mass start he came in 31st place. At the Summer Grand Prix 2009 Heer was able to win two of four competitions and, like in 2008, finished third in the overall ranking. In the World Cup, however, he had to be content with lower placements for the rest of the year, mostly even outside of the points. It was not until January 2010 that he again achieved top positions and was nominated for the Olympic Games again.

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Heer achieved 11th place in the individual on the normal hill and 22nd in the individual on the large hill. In the team competition he finished ninth with his teammates. After the games he continued to achieve good results in the World Cup and ended up in 24th place in the overall World Cup ranking. At the Swiss Nordic Combined Championships 2010 in Einsiedeln, Heer won the individual gold medal for the fourth time in a row. Heer finished his last World Cup season in 2010/11 with five top 20 placements in 27th place overall. At the 2011 World Championships in Oslo he was 25th in the individual on the normal hill and 27th in the individual on the large hill. He finished eighth in the team competition on the large hill.
