Alexander Pointner (born January 1, 1971 in Grieskirchen , Upper Austria ) is a former Austrian ski jumper and was the head coach of the Austrian national ski jumping team until April 11, 2014. In this position he was the most successful trainer both in the history of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) and in that of ski jumping.

Life

Athletic career

Alexander Pointner received his athletic training at the Stams ski school from the later ÖSV head coach Alois Lipburger and Anton Innauer , his mentor to the present day. His international career got off to a promising start. At two Junior World Championships, 1989 in Vang and 1990 in Štrbské Pleso , he jumped in the team to gold. In the World Cup, Alexander Pointner was never able to fulfill the hopes placed in him. While his teammates such as Andreas Goldberger , Heinz Kuttin and Martin Höllwarth were among the figureheads of the ÖSV-Adler during his active time, Alexander Pointner was denied a World Cup victory and participation in major events. The best place in the World Cup was a ninth place. Alexander Pointner ended his active career after seriously injuring himself during a training jump in Stams in 1993 (broken thigh), and in 1997 while skiing on the Kulm. Before that, he won the silver medal on the large hill at the Winter Universiade in Muju, South Korea .

Coaching

Alexander Pointner started his career as a coach while he was still active as an athlete. In 1992 he completed his training as a ski jumping instructor, and in 1998 he passed the state ski jumping trainer examination.

He started working as a trainer in 1995 for the Tyrolean Ski Association. From 1996 Alexander Pointner was the first full-time ski jumping trainer there. In 1999 he moved to the Austrian Ski Association as assistant coach of the head coach at the time, Alois Lipburger , until he had a fatal accident in a traffic accident in 2001. From 2001 to 2002 he held the same office under Anton Innauer . After that he was coach of the ÖSV training group II (former designation: B-Kader-Trainer) until 2004. For the 2004/05 season, Anton Innauer, who was Nordic Director of the ÖSV from 1993 to March 2010, promoted Alexander Pointner to head coach of the Austrian national team. The team around Thomas Morgenstern , Gregor Schlierenzauer , Wolfgang Loitzl , Andreas Kofler and Martin Koch was able to celebrate numerous successes in the World Cup, at the Olympic Games, World Championships and the Four Hills Tournament, so that Pointner today with 32 medals at major events, 17 of them gold, four World Cup victories as well six victories in a row at the Four Hills Tournament is considered the most successful trainer in ski jumping history and the history of the ÖSV. After the 2013/14 season, Pointner's contract was not renewed, he was replaced by Heinz Kuttin .

Private

Since 1995, Alexander Pointner has been married to the former volleyball player and educationalist Angela Pointner, with whom he has four children. The couple lived in Kematen in Tyrol from 1995 to 2005 , after which the Pointner family moved back to Innsbruck . On December 17, 2015 Pointner died 17-year-old daughter after it after a suicide attempt on November 5, 2014, a year in a vegetative state had lain. In 2015, Angela Pointner published the fantasy novel Phie and the Hades Root . Phie and the memory of the stones followed in 2017 .
