Laukkanen, who started for Viitasaaren Viesti, ran his first of 11 individual World Cup races in Lahti in March 1983 , which he finished in 63rd place over 15 km. At the beginning of the 1986/87 season, he took sixth place over 15 km in Canmore, his first World Cup points. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf , he came in 12th place over 30 km classic, ninth place over 15 km classic and sixth place with the relay. In March 1987 he was second in the relay in Oslo and reached the end of the season with 21st place in the overall World Cup, his best overall result. At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , he finished 52nd place over 30 km classic, 25th place over 15 km classic and eighth place with the relay. He completed his last individual World Cup race at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 . There he achieved 31st place over 30 km classic.
