Bøgseth's first international competition started in singles at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid . There he reached the 11th place after a 19th place in cross-country skiing and an 8th place in ski jumping. On February 22, 1982 he started in the 3x10-km relay at the Nordic World Ski Championships 1982 in Oslo . Together with Espen Andersen and Tom Sandberg , he won the bronze medal behind the teams from the GDR and Finland . On January 7, 1984 he made his debut in the World Cup and reached 12th place in Schonach in the Black Forest . At the Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo in 1984 , he again reached 11th place, as in 1980. Shortly afterwards he was able to win the gold medal with the relay at the World Cup. On December 15, 1984 in Planica Bøgseth succeeded for the first time with a 3rd place on the podium in a World Cup race. After he won silver again with the relay at the 1985 World Cup , he was able to win his first and only World Cup race on March 14, 1986 in Oslo. At the end of the 1985/86 season , like 1984/85 , he was 4th in the overall World Cup ranking. At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , he came in singles on the 23rd place and just missed the medal ranks with the team with fourth place. After the end of the 1987/88 season, Bøgseth ended his international career.
