The 35th Nordic World Ski Championships were from 17 to 27 January 1985 in Austria Seefeld in Tirol discharged. The Gundersen method was used for the first time in both disciplines of Nordic combined .

The opening was made by Austria's Federal President Dr. Rudolf Kirchschläger - patron of the world championships was Vienna's mayor Dr. Helmut Zilk , who did not appear until the closing ceremony on January 27th (scheduled for 1.30 p.m.).

At the World Championships, an overly difficult trail was deliberately chosen, where no other mastery than classic technique seemed possible - the overwhelming majority of runners nevertheless used the new skating technique and thus ensured the final breakthrough.

It is also noteworthy that none of the defending champions achieved a victory ( Thomas Wassberg, for example, was »only« twenty-sixth over 50 km).

In the nations ranking, Norway once again maintained its leading position ahead of the other Scandinavian countries Finland and Sweden . The Soviet Union and the GDR , however, could not continue their series of top placements this time. As an individual athlete, v. a. the Norwegian Anette Bøe and the Swede Gunde Svan in cross-country skiing and Hermann Weinbuch , FR Germany , in the Nordic combined.

Selection of Seefeld as the venue

The contract was awarded at the 34th FIS Congress in May 1983 in Sydney .

The Italian relay did not start promisingly, because starting runner Albarello got tangled up with Jochen Behle at the start , was 40 seconds behind, but was then in the lead; Ploner was only overtaken by Aunli 800 meters from the finish. There was also great jubilation among the Austrians, who a year earlier had torn a gap of over 9 minutes at the Olympic Games in Sarajevo as eleventh.

The Norwegian relay, which wore the starting number 1, was in the lead thanks to the starting runner Bøe, but then the lead melted and ultimately bad luck came when Nykkelmo knocked the stick out of her comrade Aunli's hand during the last change, whereby Romanowa was on par with the Norwegian tackled the last quarter of the competition.
