On March 26, 1983, he jumped his first jump in the Ski Jumping World Cup and reached 12th place in Planica and thus his first World Cup points. In the following two seasons Stolzlechner competed unsuccessfully in the Four Hills Tournament before he was able to achieve the best result of his career on January 8, 1985 with the 8th place on the normal hill in Cortina d'Ampezzo . At the end of the 1984/85 season , he finished 49th in the overall World Cup standings together with Gennadi Prokopenko and his compatriot Dennis McGrane .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1985 in Seefeld in Tirol , he reached 25th place on the normal hill. In team jumping he reached 5th place together with Mark Konopacke , Rick Mewborn and Mike Holland .

In the following season Stolzlechner took part again in the Four Hills Tournament 1985/86 . However, since he was unsuccessful in this, he ended his active ski jumping career after the tour.

Nils Stolzlechner then changed the sport and took 4th place overall at the IFCA World Championships in Tarifa in 1997 and thus became a member of a small group of athletes who participated in world championships in two different sports. In 2001 he switched to kitesurfing again. Now at the age of 47, he finished eighth in the racing discipline of the 2009 World Cup in Sylt and finished the season in 19th place in the World Cup. Nils Stolzlechner also designs surfboards and markets them under the NJS Designs logo.
