Knut Tore Apeland (born December 11, 1968 in Haukeli , Telemark ) is a former Norwegian Nordic combined athlete . His greatest success were two team world championships in 1995 and 1997.

Career

Apeland made his international debut on December 17, 1988 as part of the World Cup in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer . As 14th, he immediately managed to win two World Cup points. Surprisingly, he won his first World Cup a good two weeks later in Oberwiesenthal . After finishing ninth and seventh in Reit im Winkl and Breitenwang in January , he was again on the podium in third place at the end of the season in Oslo . His first season in 1988/89 he finished with his successes in fifth place overall. At the Norwegian Championships in Vikersund in 1989 , he won the bronze medal in the individual behind the brothers Trond Einar and Bård Jørgen Elden .

In the 1989/90 season started Apeland with a good fifth in Swiss St. Moritz . In February 1990 in Leningrad , Apeland made it back to the podium in second place. Only three weeks later he won the individual World Cup in Lahti . After just missing another podium in fourth place in Oslo, he ended up third in the overall standings. At the Norwegian Championships in 1990 he defended his bronze medal.

In the 1990/91 season Apeland did not achieve a podium for the first time. After only six World Cups, he was eighth overall. Even at the Norwegian Championships in 1991 he did not get beyond bronze again. However, he quickly found his way back to the top of the world and reached a podium again in third place at the opening World Cup of the 1991/92 season in Courchevel .

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville , he started in individual and team competitions. In the individual, he clearly missed a medal win in tenth place. Together with Fred Børre Lundberg and Trond Einar Elden , however, he was finally able to win the silver medal in the team competition. At his first World Cup after the Games in Lahti , he was second on the podium. At the Norwegian Championships in 1992 he won the bronze medal in the individual combination for the fourth time in a row.

Apeland started in Falun in 1993 at the Nordic World Ski Championships . In the individual, he won silver behind Kenji Ogiwara , before he also won this medal with the team in the team competition behind the Japanese. At the Norwegian Championships in Lillehammer in 1993 , he won a silver medal in individual for the first and last time.

After Apeland started again successfully in the 1993/94 World Cup season , he was also part of the squad for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . With the team he won the silver medal there again. In the individual, he could not build on the result of 1992 and ended up in 11th place.

At the beginning of the 1994/95 season he won the World Cup in Steamboat Springs . Apeland was also successful in Vuokatti in January. He was also world champion with the Norwegian team at the 1995 World Cup in Thunder Bay . After he achieved a podium again in his last World Cup of the season with second place in Sapporo , he finished the season again in third place overall.

Apeland's most successful season followed with the 1995/96 season . After starting the season with a victory in St. Moritz, he achieved a podium finish in all World Cups except for fourth and fifth places. In the overall standings, he finished first and won the overall World Cup ranking.

In the following season 1996/97 he could not build on this success. Despite sometimes poor results in the World Cup, he and the team won the World Cup in Trondheim at home in 1997 at the Nordic World Ski Championships.

In the years that followed, Apeland found it difficult to remain at the top of the world. In the 1998/99 season he achieved several top 10 placements and 13th place in the overall standings, but in the 1999/2000 season he was only able to achieve one single top 10 place and ended up only 24th in the overall standings Shortly before the end of his last World Cup season, he was able to achieve a podium again in his first and only Team Mass Start World Cup together with the team in third place.
