The competitions of the 32nd GDR Ski Championships took place from February 29 to March 2, 1980 in Klingenthal-Mühlleithen , Saxony . Nine competitions, seven individual and two relay decisions, in cross-country skiing , Nordic combined and ski jumping were held. A week and a half earlier, almost all of the new GDR champions had attended the XIII. Winter Olympics participated in Lake Placid . From there the Nordic skiers had brought three gold medals and one silver and one bronze medal. In addition, Veronika Hesse had become world champion over the 20 km distance during this time. The long-distance championships over 20 km for women and 50 km for men, which took place on March 16, 1980 in Oberwiesenthal , rounded off the championships.

Women

5 km

The women's competitions started with the short distance. With the exception of Barbara Petzold, who skipped a cold because of a cold, all members of Lake Placid's gold relay team took part. And these athletes made the medal award among themselves. As in the previous year, Veronika Hesse was again champion with a lead of over 20 seconds. When awarding the silver medal, tenths of a second had to decide in the end. In the end, Marlies Rostock came second ahead of Carola Anding.

Even over 10 kilometers, the winner was Veronika Hesse. It didn't look like it halfway through the route. Hesse had lost valuable seconds in a fall after about a kilometer. Therefore, at halftime, Carola Anding was 14 seconds ahead. In the end, however, Veronika Hesse made up for the deficit and ran out 22 seconds. Marlies Rostock, another member of Lake Placid's gold relay, won bronze.

Two and a half kilometers from the finish, Barbara Petzold caught up with her national team colleague and finally crossed the finish line with a 13-second lead. Bronze medalist Carola Anding crossed the finish line two minutes behind Hesse.

Nordic combination

In the absence of the Olympic champion Ulrich Wehling, the bronze medalist from Lake Placid , Konrad Winkler, and the Olympic fifth Uwe Dotzauer were the favorites. After the jump, however, the picture was different. Wilfried Ott and Frank Röder from Oberwiesenthal were ahead of Uwe Dotzauer and Konrad Winkler. In cross-country skiing, however, Konrad Winkler ran the fastest time by far and thus secured the championship title. Uwe Dotzauer needed 1:09 minutes more for the 15 kilometers, which was the third fastest time and in the end was enough for silver. For Frank Röder, the fifth fastest time came out of bronze.

Ski jumping

Normal hill

After the first round, three jumpers in the order Weber-Duschk-Glaß had taken off on the small hill. However, Oberhofer Martin Weber could not defend this lead. With the daily best distance of 76 meters, both Harald Duschk and Henry Glaß pushed past Weber. In the end, the Zella-Mehliser showerk was able to secure the championship title with a 0.3 point lead over Henry Glaß due to better posture marks.

Large hill

The jumping competition on the large hill became the Klingenthal club championships. The first six places were all athletes from the Vogtland competitive sports center. Henry Glaß could now look forward to the championship title after silver on the small hill, although the decision was very close. Only 0.8 points separated the silver medalist Thomas Meisinger from the championship title. After an indisputable 89 meters, he was still outside the medal places in the first round. With the daily best distance of 102.5 meters he catapulted himself to silver.
