GDR Ski Championships 1965

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 17th GDR Ski Championships took place for the first time from February 17 to 21, 1965 in Johanngeorgenstadt , Saxony . Almost 300 athletes competed in ten decisions in the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , two of which were team competitions. For the first time a championship title in jumping from the large hill was awarded. The organizers had problems with the snowiest winter since 1947. In Johanngeorgenstadt itself there was up to one meter of snow, on the ridge trail in Oberjugel two meters and more.

Cross-country skiing

Men

15 km

After the defeat over the twice as long distance, the Klingenthal cross-country skiers had big plans. And the revenge was successful, Helmut Weidlich won the short men's course with a clear lead of exactly one minute over Gerhard Grimmer. However, Enno Röder, the next runner from Klingenthal, was only in 5th place.

30 km

The opening competition had a surprise in store. Although Gerhard Grimmer had already won his first championship medal, relay silver, last year, he was not necessarily one of the title contenders. After 7.5 kilometers, however, he was four seconds ahead of the veteran Enno Röder. At first you could see it as a snapshot, but nothing changed later. On the contrary, Grimmer continuously expanded his lead and in the end was almost two minutes ahead of last year's champion Helmut Weidlich. Enno Röder took bronze just behind.

In the last men's running competition, 25 participants started, but without the Klingenthal trio Seidel, Röder and Weidlich. Thus the way was free for Kurt Albrecht from Oberhof, who was able to celebrate his second championship after relay gold and with it the third title for the army sports club.

Not unexpectedly, Christine Nestler won the first women's running competition. It was exciting in the battle for the bronze medal. Ultimately, the two-time Olympic participant Elfriede Spiegelhauer won the precious metal with just under a second ahead of the Zella-Mehliserin.

3x5 km relay

The women's relay race could have had a different outcome if Karin Horn from fellow favorite SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal hadn't broken a ski. So the relay from Klingenthal won the title again after a two-year dry spell. For Elfriede Spiegelhauer, who is now over 30, it was the last championship gold in her career.

Nordic combination

For the combined athletes, after the jumping, a delightful duel between a Vogtlander and a local Erzgebirge paved the way. The 23-year-old Günter Münzner from the local SG Dynamo was after the jumping behind the master of the years 62 and 63, the Klingenthaler Rainer Dietel, in second place. But with the second-best running time of all starters Münzner managed the surprise. He was the first Johanngeorgenstadt athlete to win a GDR championship title. Last year, club mate Lothar Düring, who was injured this time, drew the attention of the specialists to the SG Dynamo Johanngeorgenstadt with his runner-up in the combined championship. Rainer Dietel was runner-up just ahead of Joachim Winterlich, last year's winner Roland Weißpflog came in fifth behind old master Günter Flauger.

Ski jumping

Normal hill

Jumping on the smaller hill was also an exciting competition in the sunshine in front of 6000 spectators, even though title holder Dieter Neuendorf was the champion by a large margin. But the places behind were hotly contested. Ultimately, Petr Lesser, who had been beaten below value on the large hill, received the silver medal, while Dieter Müller, who was now in second place, won bronze.

Large hill

The first jumping from the large hill took place on the large Aschbergschanze near Klingenthal. The new master Dieter Neuendorf was able to bring the title back to Brotterode for the first time since 1961. Already after the first round, Scharf and Neuendorf, the two title contenders, emerged. However, there was a tough competition for bronze, which was only decided by the third round. Alfred Lesser was still ahead after two rounds, but was still caught by Alfred Bretschneider. The fact that the gap between 3rd and 9th place was just 4.4 points, less than between first and second place, shows how close the competition was.
