GDR ski championships 1964
The 16th GDR ski championships took place from February 19 to 23, 1964 in Oberhof , Thuringia . In eight decisions in the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , two of which were team competitions, athletes competed. The ski marathon was not held.
prehistory
The choice of Oberhof as the venue was no accident. Fifteen years earlier, the first winter sports championships in the then Soviet occupation zone had taken place at the same location. Furthermore, a new ski jumping hill in Oberhof's Kanzlersgrund was inaugurated as part of the championships in the presence of Walter Ulbricht. It was the first large new ski jumping hill in the GDR that allowed jumps over 100 meters for the first time. In this way, the GDR also adapted to the trend of holding ski jumping competitions from normal and large hills. This dichotomy was first practiced at a major event at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck, which were held two weeks before .
Cross-country skiing
Men
30 km
As in the previous year, Olympic starter Helmut Weidlich won the opening competition for men. Behind him, however, the tableau showed some surprises. Another Olympian, Enno Röder, was only able to place himself in sixth place. If the runner-up title was not the big surprise for Kurt Albrecht after the achievements of the previous year, the bronze medal for the Zella-Mehliser was not expected. However, he was already two and a half minutes behind the winner, which was also viewed critically by the experts.

Helmut Weidlich also won the second individual run. However, he beat his club mate and previous year's champion Enno Röder by just five seconds.

4 × 10 km relay
In the men's relay competition, there was the expected victory of the favorites for the Klingenthal team. The season around double champion Helmut Weidlich was too strong for the first Oberhof set to endanger it. In the end, the silver relay was three minutes behind. Nevertheless, this medal was remarkable as it was the first championship medal for Gerhard Grimmer, who was still 20 at the time.

Women
5 km
Christine Nestler, who has already been described by the press as the "Eternal Second", celebrated her championship title over the short distance for women. And this turned out to be very close. She was only one second faster than last year's champion Renate Dannhauer.

The first women's competition came as a surprise. The 29-year-old Olympian Elfriede Spiegelhauer celebrated her first individual title. She relegated her much younger competitors Nestler and Dannhauer to their places, and in the end she was only 7 seconds ahead of Christine Nestler.

3x5 km relay
The women's relay competition was a lot more exciting than the men's. After two runners, SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal was still leading with 21 seconds ahead of the first season of SC Motor Zella-Mehlis. After the last change it came to a duel between Oberwiesenthalerin Christine Nestler and Zella-Mehliserin Renate Dannhauer. And the Thuringian, somewhat surprisingly, took 40 seconds from her rival and thus won the only cross-country title for the Thuringian clubs.

Nordic combination
Already after the ski jump, after long years of dominance in Klingenthal, the Oberwiesenthal Olympic participant Roland Weißpflog was ahead of last year's champion Rainer Dietel. Third place was surprisingly Lothar Düring from Johanngeorgenstadt, ahead of the multiple GDR champion Günter Flauger. And Weisspflog also won cross-country skiing, so no one could dispute his victory. As Rainer Dietel only achieved the ninth-best run time and was one and a half minutes slower than Lothar Düring, the Johanngeorgenstadt-born man was able to celebrate the runner-up title somewhat surprisingly.

Ski jumping
The jumping competition was held over two days. On the first day of the jump three rounds were completed, whereby the worst jump was canceled in the result. The 100 m mark was reached or skipped no less than 29 times. After this first day of jumping, Veit Kühren led in front of club mate Karl-Heinz Munk and the army athlete Kurt Schramm. In front of 40,000 spectators, the ski jumping hill was consecrated on the following Sunday under the eyes of Walter Ulbricht and three more runs were completed. Again Veit Kühr won the day's classification, although he sprained an ankle after the second jump, which he could not stand because of his distance. So Kühr was able to celebrate the championship title again after 1961. Dieter Bokeloh, who missed the day's victory by 1.3 points, moved up from fifth to bronze thanks to this performance. Karl-Heinz Munk was able to secure the runner-up title with a fourth place. Because Munks fled from the GDR in December 1965 , his runner-up title was no longer mentioned in later GDR publications.

Medal table
The SC Dynamo Klingenthaler became the most successful sports club, mainly because of the strong cross-country skiers who won all three titles to be awarded.
