GDR ski championships 1983

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The competitions of the 35th GDR Ski Championships took place from February 3rd to 6th, 1983 in Johanngeorgenstadt , Saxony . Nine competitions, seven individual and two relay decisions, in cross-country skiing , Nordic combined and ski jumping were held. The lack of snow initially bothered the organizers, although a five-kilometer long ridge trail could be prepared for the running disciplines. In the night of February 4th, however, 20 cm of fresh snow fell so that the competitions could take place under excellent conditions. The long distance championships over 20 km for women and 50 km for men in Oberwiesenthal in Saxony on March 20, 1983 rounded off the title fights.

Men

15 km

This time Karsten Brandt was able to prevail in the men's second run decision. However, junior champion Uwe Wünsch from Oberwiesenthal came dangerously close to him, only 4 seconds behind. His club mate Uwe Bellmann won bronze just one day after the 30 km.

The opening race for men turned into a duel between Karsten Brandt and Uwe Bellmann. Brandt led the first 20 kilometers, but lost almost half a minute to Bellmann in the last third. For the Oberwiesenthaler it was the first GDR championship title among the seniors. Third- placed Stefan Schicker, at least third in the World Cup with the relay , was already over three and a half minutes behind.

3 × 10 km relay

In the relay decision, the individual champions were the first to start. Then Karsten Brandt handed over to his team-mate Stefan Schicker with a lead of about 30 m. In the following period he was able to increase his lead, so that he sent the final runner, Frank Schröder, 38 seconds ahead of Uwe Wünsch from Oberwiesenthal. However, he had an outstanding day and at the end of the day came over a minute ahead of Schröder. The third-placed Oberhof relay was already over four minutes behind.

5 km

Ute Noack from Oberwiesenthal won the title confidently over the short distance. She was the only one under 18 minutes. 10 km winner Kerstin Moring was able to confirm her form and took bronze. Last year's winner Petra Sölter was only 12 in the end.

A new female athlete also entered the list of winners. 19-year-old Kerstin Moring from ASK Vorwärts Oberhof, daughter of the former cross-country champion Werner Moring , was able to win a championship title at her first senior championship. In the 33-strong starting field, there was also another athlete, 17-year-old Heike Reime from SC Dynamo Klingenthal. She beat runners like Carola Anding or last year's champion Ute Noack and won the silver medal.

The title stayed in Oberwiesenthal over the long haul. In the end, Ute Noack won with a half-minute lead. Somewhat surprisingly, junior Katrin Schneider from Oberhof secured bronze. Defending champion Petra Sölter took a disappointing 14th place out of 29 starters.

3x5 km relay

In the relay decision, the Oberhof team with Olympic champion Carola Anding and the newly crowned GDR champion Kerstin Moring could not really convince. If the race was still relatively even after 2 runners, the Noack-Moring duel was decided by the Oberwiesenthalerin sovereign. In the end, the Oberwiesenthal relay won the championship title by almost a minute. The surprisingly strong Klingenthal junior women with Heike Reime as the starting runner won bronze.

Nordic combination

After the jump, Uwe Dotzauer was ahead of Gunter Schmieder and Peter Opitz. The respective point distances were still quite small. The junior competition was worth mentioning, as Heiko Hunger from Klingenthal jumped more than 70 m further than all seniors. The next day nothing changed in the distribution of medals. Uwe Dotzauer was able to celebrate his first GDR championship title with the fastest running time.

Ski jumping

Normal hill

A good-class competition developed on the normal hill, in which Manfred Deckert was leading with a width of 76 m after the first round. Since he also brought down a solid second jump with 74 m, the victory could no longer be taken from him.

Large hill

The championship title on the large hill went to Oberwiesenthal this year. Ulf Findeisen was able to bring two jumps of 100 meters each into the valley on the Great Aschbergschanze. Some of the runners-up remained well under a hundred meters, so that the gap to silver was almost 12 points.

The two Thuringian centers of excellence were able to collect only a third of all medals, including a championship title.
