from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 19th GDR ski championships took place from February 1st to 5th, 1967 in Klingenthal-Mühlleithen in Vogtland . In eleven decisions in the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , three of which were team competitions, athletes competed. For the first time a championship in team jumping was held.

Cross-country skiing

Men

15 km

The Oberhof cross-country skiers were also the measure of all things in the second running competition. Grimmer was able to defend his title by a large margin. Second place went again to Axel Lesser, who was only two seconds faster than Enno Röder. The old master was still 11 seconds faster than his designated successor Gert-Dietmar Klause. The second old master Helmut Weidlich gave up the race because of a broken ski.

In the men's opening competition, the urgent youngsters with athletes like Gerhard Grimmer and Axel Lesser showed that the two leading runners of the last few years, Helmut Weidlich and Enno Röder, had passed their zenith. In the end, the new master Gerhard Grimmer had a lead of over 5 minutes on Helmut Weidlich. With Gert-Dietmar Klause, another strong young hope won bronze.

Without his club-mate Axel Lesser, Gerhard Grimmer had to start this time. Nevertheless, he showed an impressive performance. In the end, he started as the 23rd of 33 runners, overtaking all the athletes in front of him and was the first to cross the finish line. The old masters Weidlich and Röder won their last championship medals.

4 × 10km relay

In the relay decision, all masses were sung at the first change. If the Klingenthal athletes had to admit defeat to the Oberhof runners in the running competitions that had been completed by then, this time they turned the tables. Helmut Weidlich ran out over four minutes ahead of Oberhof biathlete Egon Schnabel. Axel Lesser and Gerhard Grimmer were unable to make up for this mortgage. Since Grimmer also fell, the second Klingenthal representative pushed past the Oberhofers. A total of 17 squadrons were at the start.

Women

5 km

Christine Nestler achieved her fourth championship title in a row over the short distance, and it was quite impressive. In the end she won with 20 seconds ahead of the again strong Christel Trommer. The day before, Gudrun Schmidt had missed the relay bronze, this time it was enough for the Zella-Mehliserin. However, they were only two seconds apart from fourth-placed Gabriele Nobis.

3x5 km relay

The relay decision for women was a lot more exciting than for men. The distribution of positions of the runners meant that last year's 10 km winner Christine Nestler, who had been dethroned, faced her successor on this route, Anni Unger, in a direct duel. Unger got a six-second lead from a strong Christel Trommer. But that was not enough, in the end Nestler ran 16 seconds ahead of relay gold. The decision for the bronze medal was even more dramatic. And then the second Klingenthal agency benefited from the time measurement that was used at the time, which still managed without tenths of a second. In a thrilling sprint duel, Zella-Mehliserin Gudrun Schmidt and Klingenthaler Petra Vogel crossed the finish line with the same time, but Vogel was half a meter ahead.

Nordic combination

Already after jumping, the highly regarded young athlete and surprising World Cup fourth in 1966 , Ralph Pöhland from Klingenthal, took first place ahead of old master Günter Münzner. Last year's winner Roland Weißpflog initially found himself in 7th place. But thanks to a good running time, Weißpflog pushed himself up to silver rank ahead of his club-mate Winterlich. However, he could not endanger Pöhland as the new champion, the gap was already too big after jumping. Pöhland was seen as a candidate for a medal for the next Olympic Games as early as 1967 because of his World Cup result and subsequent achievements . Shortly before this, however, he fled to the Federal Republic. As a result, in later publications Pöhland's name as master was deleted from the championship overviews and Roland Weißpflog was listed as master.

Ski jumping

Normal hill

Last year's champion Dieter Neuendorf, who had finished third in the previous Four Hills Tournament , lived up to his role as a favorite and was again champion on the normal hill. However, he was particularly challenged by the local Bernd Karwofsky who, with the longest jump in the second round, ousted Horst Queck from the silver rank.

Large hill

What had been suggested in the two previous jumping competitions was confirmed on the large hill. Bernd Karwofsky from Klingenthal was in excellent shape and wanted to make the triumph perfect in front of a local crowd. And Dieter Neuendorf did the rest, his first jump was too short with 83.5 m, while Karwofsky took the lead with 86.5 m. And also in the second round Karwofsky showed himself in impressive form with the best distance of the day of 87 m and thus brought the championship title to Klingenthal. The last time Harry Glaß succeeded in doing this was in 1958 .

Team jumping

The team competition was a novelty. Three out of four jumpers were judged. If one had initially expected a duel between Brotterode and Klingenthal, Brotterode fell back after the first round due to the weak jumps of Bokeloh and Alfred Lesser. On the other hand, the first Zella-Mehlis set around Peter Lesser was only two points behind the local Klingenthalers. Especially thanks to Bernd Karwofsky, who had already become runner-up on the normal hill, the Klingenthal team prevailed as the first team champions. Karwofsky crowned the competition with a 90m set.
