GDR Ski Championships 1989

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 41st GDR Ski Championships took place from January 31 to February 5, 1989 in Oberwiesenthal , Saxony .

Originally, the championships should be held in Brotterode , Thuringia . Because of the lack of snow, the organizers decided at short notice to move the competitions to Oberwiesenthal.

decisions

In eleven decisions, seven individual and four team competitions, the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , around 160 participants entered. With the introduction of free style and the international trend towards more attractive competitions, there were some new programs. In cross-country skiing, the women did not do the 5 km route, but instead ran the 10 km twice, once in classic style and once in free style . The same happened to the men for the 15 km distance, but the 30 km were dropped. A team sprint was held for the first time in the combined athletes.

The championships were the yardstick for nominations for the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti . The long distance championships over 30 km for women and 50 km for men were held on March 5, 1989 in Carlsfeld , Saxony . However, there were no World Cup starters there.

Men

15 km of classic style

In the first men's running competition, the favorite Holger Bauroth clearly prevailed. His worst opponent, Uwe Bellmann from Oberwiesenthal, only came in fifth. He blamed a lack of training due to a cold.

In the end, the Thuringian was ahead by two seconds. Three other team-mates from ASK Vorwärts Oberhof made it into the top six.

In the relay decision, the men around Holger Bauroth from ASK Oberhof clearly prevailed in the end. However, Bauroth, who ran in third place, only had to make up for more than two minutes on the previously leading competition in order to bring his relay forward. With three titles he was also the most successful athlete of the championships together with Jens Weißflog. Free style also found its way into the relay, with only the first two runners still running classically.

Nordic combination

singles

The individual decision of the combiners had a very changeable course. After the jumping the Oberhof junior Tino Feix led somewhat surprisingly. With a weak infection, it was only enough for seventh place after the 15 kilometers. For the championship title, a gripping duel ensued between defending champion Bernd Blechschmidt from Oberwiesenthal and Thomas Abratis from Klingenthal. At the start, Blechschmidt was 14 seconds behind Abratis. However, he soon caught up with this and ran in the slipstream for a long time. In the final sprint, Blechschmidt was then just ahead. The Olympic gold medalist from Calgary , Uwe Prenzel , had nothing to do with the decision.

Team sprint

At this championship premiere, two athletes each formed a team. What was new was that both athletes completed five laps of 1.5 kilometers each and always took turns. The start was in cross-country skiing using the Gundersen method . The team from SC Dynamo Klingenthal won this competition premiere in a sovereign manner. The Vogtlanders increased the 38 seconds lead after the jumping to 1:31 minutes lead at the end.
