Winter Sports Championships of the Soviet Occupation Zone 1949

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first and only winter sports championships in the Soviet zone of occupation took place from February 11 to 15, 1949 in Oberhof , Thuringia . The core of the championships were the classic Nordic ski disciplines, cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , in which competitions were held in different age groups. In the individual and relay cross-country skiing decisions, only the men's champion was chosen. Furthermore, the first final round of the Eastern Zone Ice Hockey Championship took place. Figure skating was offered in the framework program. Only for women and youth athletes there were also competitions in the goal run and in the alpine combination . The outstanding athlete of the championships was Herbert Leonhardt from Mühlleithen , who was four times champion. He achieved this success within less than 72 hours.

Cross-country skiing

In the individual decision, which took place on Friday, February 11th, the Vogtlander Herbert Leonhardt caused a first surprise when he won the competition instead of his permanent competitor Herbert Friedel. In the relay on the following Saturday morning, both athletes started together in one team and won the competition with a six-minute lead.

The result of the Nordic combined consisted of the result of the cross-country skiing decision on Friday and two ski jumping runs on Saturday afternoon, February 12th. What is remarkable about it is that most of the athletes already had the decision of the cross-country relay in their bones in the morning.
