Recknagel, who started for the WSV Oberschönau , achieved 11th place in ski jumping at the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz . In the first round he achieved a new Olympic best with 62 m. A year later he set the new hill record with the same distance on what was then the largest German hill, the Hans-Heinz-Schanze in Johanngeorgenstadt . In 1930 Recknagel became German champion.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1931 , Recknagel started in combination and jumping. In both competitions, however, he could not win a medal, in jumping he fell badly.

Erich Recknagel was one of the first skiers to train in summer with rollers under his skis.
